"DON'T PANIC! DON'T PANIC!" 🚨🎺

Picture the scene at the Brass Toff workshop. This trumpet arrived looking like it had been on the wrong end of a skirmish with a German U-boat. Just look at the "Before" photo—the bell flare was more crumpled than Captain Mainwaring's pride after a dressing down from the Chief Warden. You can almost hear the owner shouting, "They don't like it up 'em!"

Standing to Attention:
But there is absolutely no need to panic when Paul is on duty. He doesn't tolerate insubordination from crumpled metal. Armed with his heavy-duty mandrels and over 40 years of engineering discipline, he ordered that brass to fall straight back into line.

In a world that now seems to accept Fragility over Resilience, Indolence over Diligence and Replacement over Repair, there really was only one place for this cornet to find its way to.

Following the processes taught to him over 45 years ago by the craftsmen at Thomas Reynolds in Manchester, Paul was stretched to the very limits of his abilities with this one.

An unfortunate accident (re: driven over by a car whilst in a gig bag) brought about a very distressed email by a distraught customer late at night. Their instrument had become a twisted wreck of brass, that looked more like a crushed baked bean tin ready for the recycle bin than a £3000 professional cornet.

'Long patience' was required!!

A determination to make a negative into a positive and to prove to any doubters that with time and persistence you will prevail.

There are many 'Repairers' our there, but few with the abilities required to take on such a task!!

This was the moment for a time served craftsman to pull on every bit of knowledge that his mentors and his own personal experiences had taught him.
NO replacement parts, just a burning desire to see his customer have a smile on their face once again.

Captain Mainwaring would be immensely proud of the logistical maneuvering from Steve Critchlow and the brilliant Burbage Band today! Steve marched right into the Brass Toff workshop and deposited no less than SIX walking casualties from his progressive learner band onto Paul’s bench.

When faced with half a dozen battered training instruments, did Paul break a sweat? "DON'T PANIC, MR MAINWARING!"

Steve is doing a magnificent job leading one of the most innovative and imaginative bands in the North West. Getting these training instruments back into frontline condition is absolutely essential for securing the future success of the organization. Here is the news. Top trumpet player Mark Harrison has been spotted at the Brass Toff counter. I said to him, "What brings you here?" He said, "I've got an unexpected week off from my show in Belfast." I said, "Well, you've come to the right place, we're absolutely nowhere near Belfast!"

Instead of putting his feet up, Mark made the very wise decision to bring his trumpet in for a full service. With a busy schedule looming on the horizon, he knows that Paul’s legendary workshop skills are exactly what’s needed to keep his instrument playing flawlessly. "Bonjour! This time next year, we’ll be playing in the Championship Section!" 💰🎺

Take a look at the state of this Besson Euphonium before Paul got his hands on it. The red rot on that 1st valve compensating slide was so bad, it looked like it had been used as a jack for a three-wheeled Trotters Independent Traders van!

Most other "repairers" these days would look at the lengthy time delays for official spare parts, give you a look of profound sadness, and declare the instrument completely obsolete or "it will take 12 months to get a new slide".

A Proper Job:

Listen, I don’t normally do brass instruments—I’m usually shifting three-wheeled vans—but Paul at Brass Toff has done such a blinding job on this Sovereign cornet, I’m tempted to put it in the showroom next to a Capri Ghia!

Picture the scene: Paul arrives at the Brass Toff workshop, thoroughly refreshed from a well-deserved short break away. He opens the door, expecting a calm, organized start to the week.

What is sitting on his bench? A 60-year-old Imperial EEb Bass.
