One thing we hear from music teachers all the time is:

“I hope they keep playing over the summer.”

Not because they have to. Not because there’s a lesson next week. But because music becomes part of who they are.

Many music educators talk about the “summer slide.” It’s that time when students step away from their instruments and lose some of the progress they’ve worked so hard to build (most music education studies and research show how students lose a significant amount of their progress over the summer break, especially without regular practice time).

So, when teachers say they hope their students keep playing, it comes from a place of care.

They hope their students pick up their instrument on a rainy afternoon because they want to, or play their favourite song for family and friends or remember how far they’ve come this year and be proud of themselves.

To every student finishing the school year: keep playing. Your future self will thank you. 🎵

DON’T:
Be surprised when a 5-minute saxophone lesson turns into a 20-minute conversation about dinosaurs, football, or why the flute is the best instrument… during a saxophone lesson. 🤦🏻‍♀️

DON’T:
Underestimate the power of a sticker, a high-five, or a simple “well done.”

DON’T:
Forget to remind students how far they’ve come.

A few moments after playing an instrument (it’s that instant) clears your mind, improves focus, and brings a sense of calm, especially after a hectic day. It’s one of the best ways to switch off, a proper reset, and bring you back to your self.

Manifesting more summer gigs, more live music, and more moments where the music becomes this spark, this moment (THAT moment) where everyone is feeling it together (on stage and in the crowd).

Manifesting less doubting myself, less overthinking, and more trusting that doing what I love means something to me and everyone that listens to me play.
