When anyone asks of my trip to South Africa, and how scary it was to be next to lions, they're always surprised when I say, although I wasn't scared, to be in the presence of a heard of elephants is something else. I just can't describe it.

🐘 WORLD ELEPHANT DAY | 12 AUGUST 🐘
Today we celebrate one of the most remarkable animals on Earth — the elephant. ❤️
Intelligent, social and incredibly complex, elephants are so much more than a symbol of the wild. They are ecosystem engineers, helping to shape the environments that countless other species depend upon.
🐘 The elephant's story
There are three living species of elephant: the African savanna elephant, African forest elephant and Asian elephant.
But all three face serious threats.
🦷 The ivory trade
Poaching for ivory has devastated elephant populations in many parts of Africa. Although international ivory trade is heavily restricted, illegal poaching and trafficking continue.
🌿 Loss of habitat
As forests and grasslands are converted for agriculture, roads and development, elephants are losing the space they need to roam, feed and raise their young.
⚡ Human–elephant conflict
When elephants' traditional routes and feeding grounds overlap with farms and settlements, conflict can occur. Crops can be destroyed and both people and elephants can be injured or killed.
🐘 A slow-growing population
Elephants have long pregnancies and usually raise only one calf at a time. This means populations can take many years to recover after major losses.
🌍 Why elephants matter
Elephants are often called ecosystem engineers because they physically change their environment.
They knock down trees, create pathways, dig water holes and disperse seeds — helping to create habitats that benefit countless other plants and animals.
When we protect elephants, we're not just protecting one species.
We're protecting an entire ecosystem. 🌍
This World Elephant Day, let's celebrate these incredible animals and remember that their future depends on giving them space to live, migrate and raise their families in the wild.
🐘 Let them roam. Let them thrive. Let them remain wild.

🦁 WORLD LION DAY | 10 AUGUST 🦁
Today we celebrate one of the world’s most iconic animals — but also shine a light on why lions need our protection. ❤️

🦁 The numbers

Lions are currently classed as Vulnerable, and their populations have declined by roughly 40–50% in the last 30 years.
They have disappeared from more than 80% of their historical range and are now extinct in 26 countries.
There is hope, though. Well-managed and well-funded reserves, particularly in southern Africa, are showing that lion populations can recover when given the space and protection they need.

⚠️ What is threatening lions?

🐄 Human–lion conflict
As wild habitats shrink, lions come into increasing contact with people and livestock. Farmers may kill lions to protect their animals, sometimes using poison.

🦓 Loss of prey
The illegal bushmeat trade removes huge numbers of animals such as zebras and antelope from the savanna, leaving lions with less natural prey.

🦷 Illegal wildlife trade
Lions are poached for their teeth, claws and bones, which are traded illegally, including for use in traditional medicines.

🌾 Loss of habitat
As human populations grow, wild grasslands are increasingly converted into farmland, roads and settlements.

🌍 Why protecting lions matters
Lions are an umbrella species. Protecting the large, healthy habitats they need also protects hundreds of other species that share those ecosystems.

They also play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance, helping to regulate populations of grazing animals and preventing overgrazing that can damage the landscape.

So today, let's celebrate lions — but let's also remember that protecting them means protecting the whole ecosystem they call home.

🦁 A future with lions is a future with wild spaces.
