A few things wool does that man-made can’t.

It holds a third of its weight in water before it feels damp. Warm in February, cool in August. A single fibre bends twenty thousand times before it breaks. And every summer the sheep grow a new one.

And yet shearing can still cost a fell farm more than the fleece is worth. That’s why we started Lake District Tweed - we pay our farming friends above market rate for wool from across the thirteen Lakeland valleys, so the wool is worth something to the families who tend the flocks.

Here in the Lake District on holiday? Come and feel the cloth at our farm shop just below Coniston Water.

Further afield? Please browse our collection online - link in bio.

And we’d love it if you could like, save and share this post - the more we get discovered, the more fleece we can buy from more farms next year.

Open Wednesdays and Saturdays 10-4 and by appointment. Send us a DM book a visit if you can’t make a Wednesday or Saturday.

Our little Lakeland farm shop here on the farm is open again today fro 10-4.

Here’s a peek of a few of the things we have on our shelves:

Lake District Tweed throws, fabric and gifts (of course 😊) - made from 13 different tweeds, one for each main valley in the Lake District, using wool from farms only in the valley it’s named after: Coniston, Thirlmere, Windermere, Langdale, Buttemere, Eskdale, Haweswater, Ullswater, Ennerdale, Duddon, Wasdale, Borrowdale and Grasmere.

Our Soap Dairy soaps, skincare, balms and gifts, made here on the farm from the rich Jersey milk from Wren, our beautiful “house cow”.

Skeins of wool from our Wool Library. Single bred, or mixed breed. All traceable back to farms that reared the sheep for the wool.

And a few other Lakeland gifts and souvenirs too.

Please pop by and say hello, we’d love to meet you.

We’re just south of Coniston Water at Nibthwaite Grange Farm, Bletherbarrow Lane, LA12 8DB.

If you can’t make it today, we’re also open Wednesdays and by appointment, DM us to book a visit.

We’re over the moon to have been nominated for The Artisan Founder business awards 🙌 !

We’re one of the finalists in the Material-Led Craft Award - which recognises makers whose work is shaped by a deep understanding of their material - which is exactly the part we care most about here - the wool, the sheep and the farms who tend them 😊.

If you also love what we do please, please vote for us. We’ve added a link to the voting in our bio.

Thank you Lynsey and team - it means so much to us to be recognised for what we do 🙏.

Voting closes on August 31st.

What does the”Farming” logo on our blankets mean?

FiPL (Farming in Protected Landscapes) is a Defra scheme run here by the Lake District National Park Authority, backing farm projects that do something for nature, climate, people or place.

It helped fund the work behind these thirteen valley tweeds - fleeces from thirteen Lakeland valleys, traceable back to the farms they came from.

“Farming” is here because this cloth wouldn’t exist without it 😊

Racy Ghyll farm have just shorn their Herdwicks - this is their flock post shearing (thanks Helen Rebanks for the photo 😊).

And this is the fleece that is used in our Ullswater throw, alongside Whitefaced Woodland wool which we source from the Hodgsons at nearby Glencoyne Farm.

Fleece from the fells to fabric in our farm shop - a journey that, including the making of the tweed, is less than 100 miles 🐑🤍.
