Good silage preservation starts before the first trailer arrives. Taking time now to prepare your clamp can help minimise avoidable losses and protect the dry matter and nutrients you put into store.
Before harvest, check:
🔍 Clamp condition – inspect floors and walls and repair any damage.
🧹 Cleanliness – clear out old silage, debris and anything that could damage the film or contaminate the fresh forage..
⬜ Wall film – have it ready to line the clamp and help create an effective seal around the edges/silage shoulders..
📏 Film requirements – calculate what you'll need before harvest starts, including oxygen barrier film and protective covers.
⚫ Weights & sealing materials – make sure gravel bags, tyres (tires) or other weighting systems are ready and in good condition.

Still using conventional PE film?
See what happens when oxygen gets through.
Oxygen is one of the biggest causes of deterioration in stored forage. That's why keeping it out is so important.
In this simple demonstration, banana slices were sealed beneath a standard PE film and Passion Yellow Oxygen Barrier Film.
The result is easy to see.
The banana beneath the standard PE film browned much more quickly, while the banana beneath Passion Yellow remained noticeably fresher.
While bananas clearly aren't silage, they provide a simple visual demonstration of what happens when more oxygen reaches what's being protected.
The same principle applies to silage. The more oxygen that enters the clamp, the greater the opportunity for deterioration and dry matter loss.

How T H I C K should a silage film be?
Thickness is easy to see and feel, but the most important measure of performance is its Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR).
OTR measures how much oxygen passes through a silage film over a 24-hour period.
The lower the OTR, the better the oxygen barrier.
OTR values are usually reported using one of two recognised test methods:
• ASTM D3985 – measures oxygen transmission using 100% oxygen.
• DIN 53380-3 (or the equivalent ISO method) – measures transmission using air (21% oxygen).
The numbers are different because the test conditions are different, but the principle is always the same:
Lower OTR = Better oxygen protection.
For example, a thick black polyethylene sheet may feel stronger, but it can still allow significant amounts of oxygen to pass through. By comparison, a true oxygen barrier film such as Passion Yellow has an OTR around 1,000 times lower than conventional polyethylene films, helping to dramatically reduce oxygen ingress into the clamp.
So next time you're comparing silage films, don't just compare the thickness.

Summer heat is unavoidable. Heating losses aren't.

4 simple ways to reduce heating and spoilage during feed-out

Once a clamp is opened, every effort should be made to keep oxygen out and silage quality in. During periods of warm weather, good feed-out management becomes even more important.

1️⃣ Keep a clean, vertical clamp face
A smooth, tight face helps reduce oxygen pe*******on and minimise spoilage.

2️⃣ Remove silage evenly across the face
Avoid creating ledges or leaving loose material exposed to the air.

3️⃣ Minimise oxygen exposure
Only expose the amount of silage needed each day, maintaining a minimum feed-out rate of 20 cm/day. Keep the remaining clamp tightly sealed with a high-quality oxygen barrier and protective cover to minimise air ingress.

4️⃣ Remove spoiled or heated silage
Clearing away loose material and feed refusals helps maintain forage quality and feed intakes.

When temperatures rise, every pass across the clamp face matters.

🌱 DON'T CONFUSE ABUNDANCE WITH SURPLUS

The UK has grown one of the best silage crops in years. Now farmers need to make it last.

The UK and Ireland's forage season has given many farmers plenty to be optimistic about. With second and even third cuts already in the clamp, forage analysis suggests 2026 has produced some of the highest-quality first-cut silage seen for several years.

☀️ And it's just as well that nature delivered. After weeks of exceptionally hot weather, some livestock farms have already started drawing on winter silage reserves as grazing land has literally dried up.

Exceptional silage is also exceptionally valuable. After one of the most expensive growing seasons for some time, every tonne in the clamp represents a significant investment. And with uncertainty surrounding European grain and maize production this season, home-grown forage could become even more precious over the coming months.

⚠️ There's another reason not to become complacent. The same higher sugar levels and readily digestible nutrients that make this year's silage so valuable to livestock also provide an ideal food source for yeasts and moulds if oxygen reaches the clamp. Once air gets in, heating and aerobic spoilage can reduce dry matter, feed quality and ultimately the value of the crop you've worked so hard to produce.

🛡️ That's why protecting silage doesn't end when the harvest is over. Effective oxygen-barrier films, secure sealing and good feed-out management all help ensure the silage entering the ration is the same high-quality forage that went into the clamp.

This year's silage may be one of the best you've ever made. Don't let abundance become waste. Protect every tonne.
