Logs.co.com

Logs.co.com A local company offering a truly sustainable source of kiln dried logs, sourced locally, split and dried on site and delivered all within a 15 mile radius.

All of our logs are dried to a moisture content of less than 20%, so you can buy from us, confident in the knowledge that a log we deliver today can go straight into your woodburner. High moisture content logs smoke badly, burn badly and burn with less heat, becasue they have to burn off the moisture first before they can create the heat. Would you burn water? You could be trying too! We source ou

r wood from our own trees and from local tree surgeons. We split and process the logs on site and dry them in our own kiln. We deliver them free of charge within a 15 mile radius. We don't import them from Latvia or anywhere else! Why have an environmentally sound heating system and then have your wood shipped across continents? We can deliver in loose bulk of 1 or 2 cubic metres, or our best sellers are the barrow bags. These are easily stacked, easily stored, compact tall thin bags ideal to store in your garage or shed, before bringing into the house to burn. Why are you keeping wood outside for 18 months to seasoned it with a bit of mould and a large measure of creepy crawlies and then bring it into your house? We are now taking preliminary orders for the first batch to come out of the kiln in approximately 7 - 10 days time. Go on, give us a try!!!! You won't regret it.

The Logs Season is here again!

Well, its actually been here all year as we have only had three single weeks in 2021 where we haven’t delivered logs!

The new legislation for firewood will make life interesting as well! From February 2021, the legislation changed to say that you can only buy logs in volumes of LESS THAN 2 Cubic Metres (that’s a lot of logs!!) if the product that you buy is under 20% moisture content and ready to burn.

There is a new Trade Classification/Certificate called “Ready to Burn” and all companies supplying firewood in volumes of under 2 cubic metres have to be accredited (and we are!!).

You can still buy firewood of over 20% moisture if you buy in volumes of 2 cubic metres or more, and the supplier should also supply details on how you should store that wood so that it can continue to dry down before it is used.

We are continuing to use the ever popular barrow bags, hand packed and delivered to your woodstore, not dumped loose on your driveway. FOUR of our bags equates to a solid ONE cubic meter of logs. When you buy “loose” loads, there is quite a significant amount of AIR in the load and in our own experiments a loose load of one cubic metre fits into only three of our barrow bags! So you get plenty of firewood in our barrow bags and most importantly, because ALL of our wood is kiln dried by us, its all under 20% moisture and will burn beautifully in your fireplace or stove.

One of the most important things about our product is that it is as environmentally sound as it can be. We source all of our firewood from local tree surgeons who work within a 15 mile radius of our site. We deliver to a 15/20 mile radius as well. So we can say with absolute certainty, that the kiln dried firewood we produce has travelled no more than 35 miles MAXIMUM in its entire life. We are also using a tree that has already been taken down. We are not harvesting trees purely for firewood.

One of the other major concerns recently as well has been the supply chain difficulties with haulage. We do the deliveries in house as well. We have just taken delivery of our new van which looks brilliant in its new livery! It has already started paying for itself as I’ve been asked for cards when out on deliveries!

We are already up to 50 bags a week on deliveries in September, so make sure that you get your orders in as there is always a big jump in orders when the days start to turn colder!

You can order online at www.logs.co.com or call us on 01525 876554 and as well as our regular, super popular standard stovemix bags, we have also now produced a new line of pure hardwood only bags. All of our wood comes under the “Ready to Burn” accreditation and we look forward to delivering to you soon!

Log Stores – Are they worth it?

Logs are “wet” when they are full of sap, the tree having been cut down. The kiln drying process is simply a speeded up and improved process of seasoning, whereby the sap/moisture is removed from the whole of the log.

Seasoning can take about 2 years and involves leaving the logs outside in a dry and draughty place. Kiln drying involves putting the logs into a hot and windy area and removing the moisture/humidity as the logs heat up.

Seasoning logs rarely get below 22% moisture as that is generally what the air humidity is, in the summer periods. Once logs are “dry” there is a very limited capacity for that log to take up moisture again through its entire thickness.

Whilst the outside may get wet (rain etc) that wetness would take years to return back to the centre of a log and would do so as the wood breaks down and slowly rots/biodegrades. That isn’t going to happen as its put onto your fire!

So, the reason why log stores are generally open fronted with slatted sides and a roof, is that the roof keeps the bulk water off, the slatted sides allow any dampness from rain to dry back off again.

With seasoned/unseasoned wood, if the moisture content is say 25/30%, as it does dry in the air, then that moisture has to escape, otherwise it will sit on the outside of the logs, causing mould/damp. That’s why you don’t want to dry wood inside your house! That moisture has to go somewhere!

When we reload a kiln with fresh, wet wood and then start the kiln up, the first few days there is the greatest amount of moisture being released from the logs. It can look like a tropical rainforest in there at first sometimes, the sir is really damp and there is water dripping off the roof as the hot air cools and drops the moisture!

Because our logs are much drier than seasoned, they wont “sweat” anywhere near as much as a normally seasoned log as the moisture content is so much lower. So you can leave them in the bags for a reasonable period of time, keeping the bag in a dry place, (under a tarpaulin and just off the ground is how I keep mine) or a log store is absolutely fine (and can look like a really nice feature of a garden – whereas my white bags have a limited aesthetic appeal!!

So if you want your kiln dried logs to look pretty, get a log store!!

Is your firewood Grown Locally, Cut Locally, Dried Locally and Delivered Locally?

Are you buying "Ready to Burn" logs?

Kiln dried logs are ready to burn. You buy them today and can burn them straight away. Not all kiln dried logs are the same though, the vast majority of kiln dried firewood in the UK is imported! It comes in shipping containers from Eastern Europe! So when you want an environmentally sound product, it doesn't really work that well, when you transport it several thousand miles from its source to the point of use!

So, our firewood comes from local tree surgeons. They work within a 15 mile radius of our site in Toddington and bring the wood to us on a daily basis. We split and process it and dry it in our own kiln. The kiln is heated by burning the bits of the trees that are difficult to split into firewood, so the whole tree is consumed, there is no waste at all! We dry the wood to under 20% moisture content and deliver in a 15 mile radius as well. So the longest distance that a piece of our firewood might travel in its entire life would be 30 miles maximum!!

So Kiln dried logs from www.logs.co.com

Probably the most sustainable, environmentally sound firewood you can buy.

Grown Locally, Cut Locally, Dried Locally, Delivered Locally.

And Ready to Burn when its delivered to your logs store, not dumped loose on your driveway!

Is Firewood truly sustainable????

OK, that might seem like a strange headline from a firewood supplier, but the question is valid! Firewood is so often described as an environmentally and sustainable fuel, but to my mind, this is something of a paradox. Anyone who has an open fire, or a wood burning stove must realise that the speed at which you burn the wood that you use, vastly outstrips the speed at which the tree can actually grow! So unless we are continually planting vast increases in woodland acreage, then “sustainable forests” simply do not add up!!

So, our localised operation, where we are taking trees from local tree surgeons, is by far, the most sustainable way of doing this! The trees that come into us have been removed because they need/have to be. They are coming down anyway, it is simply what would happen to the cut down timber afterwards that changes. Instead of going to landfill, it comes to us. The smaller branches are chipped and the larger branches and the trunks are chopped into manhandleable lumps to get them off the sites. This makes them hard to process for firewood (if you are a big commercial operation) as big processing machines want clean, straight timber to be as efficient as possible.

We use the whole tree. The thicker branches and the trunks are split into logs and the difficult bits, the twisted bits or where branches join the main trunk, are seasoned and used as our own fuel for our own biomass boiler, which produces the heat which dries the firewood!

Even the distances for travelling are as low as it is possible for them to be! The tree surgeons we work with work within a 15 mile radius of our site here in Toddington. 98% of what we deliver falls within the same radius, so any firewood that you buy from us travels no more that 30 miles in its entire life, from growing as a tree to being burnt for your fuel!

Our Kiln ensures that every bit of timber that we deliver to you, is dry and ready to burn. It is as environmentally friendly an option as you can get, for clean, dry, kiln dried firewood.

So stock up your log stores for this winter, with clean and dry firewood from www.logs.co.com

Today, I delivered to a customer who really understands why you need to order dry wood. Not all wood is the same. When its wet, it doesn't burn, and by "wet" we mean the moisture content of the log, which is essentially the sap that kept the tree alive when it was growing.

A bit of dampness on the outside from the atmosphere, a spot of rain etc etc makes very little difference to a "dry" log. Any external bit of moisture dries off in no time when you put it in the basket next to the stove, ready to go on.

Sometimes, the availability of fuel seems overwhelming, but despite that, the bottom line is that you still need dry wood.

So when I'm 100 yards from my customer, on their driveway and their driveway looks like this, then you know that they really do understand the benefits of dry firewood logs from logs.co.com !!!!!!
