Rod lock-ups mid-chimney don't cost you money. They cost you a booking.

One sweep bought cheap rods to save £50 up front. Twelve months, three snapped rods and a service call later, he'd spent more than SnapLok would've cost him outright.

Dual-button ButtonLok connections don't disengage mid-spin. Stainless ferrules don't wear out season one.

Buy cheap, buy twice. Some lessons only need learning once. 🔧

Cheap rods cost more than you think, over time

Rod lock-ups mid-sweep, snapped connections, replacement orders every few months: it adds up faster than the invoice suggests.

Mark Hart went through exactly this before he found SnapLok. A year of using the only rotary rod system on the market at the time meant frequent breakages, constant lock-ups, and a manufacturer with no real incentive to fix any of it. No competition, no urgency.

SnapLok's dual button connection was built to solve that specific problem. Fewer rotations to engage, and both buttons can't be pressed at once, so the rods can't disengage mid-clean. Solid nylon rods with stainless steel ferrules hold up where cheaper materials fatigue and crack.

Add a SootDevil to the mix and you're covering the whole job with kit that's meant to last years, not months.

What's your current rod system actually costing you in downtime and replacements each year?

95% of the soot ends up in the separator tank. Only 5% reaches the vacuum.

That's the difference the Cyclonic Separator makes on a fireplace knock out or a birds nest job.

A standard trade vacuum takes the full hit and clogs fast.

The SootDevil setup with the RPS Cyclonic Separator is built to take that load off, job after job.

What actually separates SootDevil from a standard vac

A standard trade vacuum will pull soot in, but it's not built to handle what a fireplace knock-out throws at it.

The SootDevil range works with the RPS Cyclonic Separator, and the difference shows in the numbers: on big jobs like knock-outs, bird's nests or creosote removal, around 95% of the heavy soot deposits end up in the separator tank, with only 5% reaching the vacuum itself. That means less clogging, less filter strain, and a lot less mess to deal with afterwards.

Add the Stacker System and you've got proper storage for the SootDevil hose carrier too, keeping everything organised on the van rather than rattling around loose.

If you're still running a standard vac on chimney jobs, what's your filter replacement schedule looking like?

Still using one lead rod every time? That's the mistake that breaks kits.

Sweeps switching to rotary often keep habits from their old system, and a fixed white lead rod is the biggest one. Run the same rod first every time and it weakens fast, then snaps mid-sweep.

SnapLok kits skip the white lead rod on purpose. Rotate all rods equally instead. Simple fix, longer rod life.

Switching rod systems? Avoid these common errors

Switching to a new rotary rod system trips up more sweeps than you'd expect, usually over small things that cause big headaches later.

The biggest one: using the same rod as your lead rod every time. It weakens that one rod faster than the rest, and eventually it snaps mid-sweep. Rotate all your rods through the lead position instead.

Another mistake is treating rod diameter as one-size-fits-all. An 11 metre open flue might need 4 of your 15mm rods paired with 8 of your 18mm rods, not just one size stacked end to end.

And don't judge a system on price alone. Cheap ferrules and thin steel might save you money upfront, but they cost you callouts later when connections fail on the job.

SnapLok's dual button rods are quadruple crimped and heat treated for exactly this reason, built so the connection doesn't let go while you're mid-clean.

Have you had a lead rod fail on you at the worst possible moment?

STS TS01 vs Sundstrom SR100: Which Half Mask Fits Your Work?

Choosing the wrong respirator isn't just uncomfortable — it can put your lungs at serious risk when you're working in dusty, sooty flue environments day after day. Both the STS TS01 (£24.50 ex. VAT) and the Sundstrom SR100 (£32.50 ex. VAT) are certified half mask respirators trusted by trade professionals, but they suit different working styles and budgets. The STS TS01 comes bundled with a filter for a lower entry price, making it a practical choice for sweeps who want reliable P3 particulate protection without a significant outlay. The Sundstrom SR100, built from skin-friendly silicone with dual exhalation valves for reduced breathing resistance, is engineered for extended wear comfort — a genuine advantage on longer jobs where fatigue and heat build-up become a factor. 🛡️

Filter running costs are worth factoring in too. The STS YP3R replacement filter sits at £5.00, while the Sundstrom SR510 P3 filter comes in at £7.50, with optional SR221 pre-filters available to extend filter life and reduce ongoing spend. As an authorised STS Shigematsu UK dealer and Sundstrom stockist, Rotary Power Sweeping supplies both systems with the full range of accessories. Which mask do you currently use on the job, and what made you choose it? Drop your answer below — it's the kind of real-world insight that helps fellow sweeps make the right call. 💬

Not all solid fuels burn the same — and your flue pays the price. 🔥

Wood, coal, and smokeless fuels each leave distinct deposits, from dry powdery soot to dense, glazed tar. Knowing what you're dealing with before you sweep means choosing the right heads and protecting your clients properly. 🧹

The fuel type matters. So does your kit.
