I was surprised to see these butterflies in the margins of a book of hours - this is the page for St Vincent. It’s as if they’d just flown into the scriptorium and landed on the page. It’s comforting to see how red admirals were appreciated as much in 1440 as they are today.

In Assisi recently I leafed through a medieval book of hours, which led me to buy a reproduction of the Hours of Catherine of Cleves, from about 1440. I was surprised to see a birdcage looking like a DNA double helix (with extra strands) on this page.
