BALVENIE 12YO THE SWEET TOAST OF AMERICAN OAK

Stories always start at the beginning (unless they're one of those purposely confusing stories like Memento or those Funnybones books - it's never explained why they're skeletons!), and this is the introductory release from The Balvenie Stories range! These releases all give light to events and people in Balvenie's past and present - this one, for example, takes inspiration from apprentice malt master Kelsey McKechnie and her idea to import virgin oak barrels from Kentucky and deeply toast them at the distillery's cooperage. They were then filled with Balvenie's ex-bourbon oak aged whisky for a finishing period, resulting in... Well, this very whisky you see here!


Nose: Lusciously malty with some sweet fudge, followed by citrusy and oak vanilla aromas with layers of spicy oak notes of ginger and cinnamon.
Palate: Candied orange and lemon peel, vanilla toffee and butterscotch, layers of blossom honey, some melted brown sugar and oak spices at the end.
Finish: Rich and malty with gentle waves of oak vanilla and subtle spices.

The Dalmore 15 year old was first launched in 2007. Matured in Matusalem, Apostoles and Amoroso Sherry casks, it proffers all those winter spice, orange zest and chocolate notes characteristic of Dalmore.

TASTING NOTES.
Nose: A chocolate orange. Potpourri, perfumed. Fruitcake, Sherry.
Palate: Medium, lovely delivery. Zesty orange, Curaçao, chocolate. Winter spice, stem ginger in syrup. Hints of anise and a little hickory.
Finish: Malty barley and smoky espresso.

The 2020 release of aged whisky from Longrow, the heavily peated malt, made at Springbank in Campbeltown. The 18 Year Old is a sought-after favourite rich, creamy, smoky and sweet with notes of marshmallows toasting on peat embers.

TASTING NOTES.
Nose: Initially rum soaked strawberries with a delicate aroma of peat smoke. Vibrant scents of pineapple, mango and lemon sherbet follow.
Palate: A lovely burst of sweetness and smoke like marshmallows toasting on peat embers. Rich flavours of sea salt, dark chocolate, raisins, prunes and molasses.
Finish: A pronounced peated malt note, like being inside the kiln after it’s just finished burning. Liquorice and the classic Springbank influence.

An excellent 12 year old single malt from the Glenlivet Distillery in Speyside, which enjoys its maturation in both European and American oak casks. It's an immensely popular expression which disappeared from shelves in 2015, but has since returned! A great example of the character of Glenlivet's whisky, boasting a bounty of orchard fruit, fragrant florals and honeyed malt notes carried on a creamy mouth feel. Tasting NotesNose: Apricot, pineapple, greengages, citrus blossom and toasted teacake.Palate: Buttery and vanilla-rich, though still packing all the bright fruit notes from the nose.Finish: A soft crackle of oaky spice and malt, plus a hint of red apple juiciness.

Blended from a mixture of bourbon and sherry casks, the light colour of this malt belies the richness of its character. The nose has a wide range of aromas, from citrus fruits to pears and a hint of peat, while the palate shows touches of smoke, vanilla essence, nutmeg, cinnamon and the salty tang characteristic of the distillery. Picked up the top prize in its category at the World Whiskies Awards 2014.

TASTING NOTES.
Nose: The nose offers up plenty of oak, exotic spices, guava, heather honey and soft smoke.
Palate: A full, sweet, creamy palate with hints of smoke, marzipan and cigar boxes.
Finish: A smoky finish, trailing off on sweet cider and toasty barley.

One of the classic after-dinner malts, Balvenie Doublewood's extra complexity and richness are a result of a second maturation in fresh sherry casks. Great stuff.

TASTING NOTES.
Nose Chocolate and raspberry aromas, with rich brioche and stewed cherries.
Palate Fresh red fruits - cherries and raspberries - combine with sponge-cake mix and cinnamon and a sprinkling of black pepper. Quite a big-flavoured dram, but balanced.
Finish Sweet spice, red fruits, rich sponge cake.
