With the big tides this week, mackerel should be taken in good numbers. Last week was slow as the tides were tiny. Mackerel were plentiful on Roker Pier on Sunday (pictured) and sport will be better as the week goes on.
Seaham North Pier has given up mackerel along with dogfish and po***ck. Pictured is Dave Bond with his winning bag in the Seaham SAC competition, which included the heaviest single fish, a 3.55lb codling.
Roker Pier saw an upturn in the mackerel fishing over the weekend, with bags of up to 30 fish. Daylight lures and spinners gave the best results. Float fishing tactics has produced some nice sized po***ck - mackerel strip and sandeel bait have been the top baits for the bigger po***ck.
Remember if you are heading to the pier for mackerel, take your cool box and an ice pack with you to keep your catch fresh.
The rock marks at Marsden have seen some nice wrasse taking crab baits. If you fish with light tackle, you can have good sport with these fish.
Flounders have been showing in better numbers in the River Tyne with the odd fish going close to 2lb. - marks upriver of Church Bank are worth checking out.
Has anyone heard about the repairs on the Old North Pier? There have been workmen on there for the past few weeks.
Finally pictured is a nice tope taken by Steve Tate boat fishing out of Sunderland. The tope took hokkai daylight lure baited with mackerel.
