Saturdays at the farm shop have been getting a little busy, so tomorrow we’re going to trial longer opening hours!
We’ll be ready for CSA members and customers from 8.30am, and will be open right through until our usual 3pm. 🌿

📣 Farm Shop Saturday Announcement! 🌱

Saturdays at the farm shop have been getting a little busy, so tomorrow we’re going to trial longer opening hours!

We’ll be ready for CSA members and customers from 8.30am, and will be open right through until our usual 3pm. 🌿

It’s meant an extra-busy day of harvesting, washing and organising to get everything ready for the longer opening tomorrow ! 🥕🥬

Meanwhile, the field area is looking pretty good at the moment! 🌱 Tatties, leeks, beetroot, carrots, squash and winter brassicas are all coming along nicely.

We’re also harvesting the last of our summer cauliflowers, which will be in the farm shop tomorrow! 🥦

🥕 Farm Shop Open Tuesday 3–7pm! 🌱

We’ve got lots of lovely veg in the shop today, so come and stock up! Cauliflowers and calabrese are back this week, alongside fresh dill and coriander. Plus our own Orla potatoes 🥔

Alongside all lots of the regular goodies: mixed salad bags, courgettes, French beans, cucumbers, chard, kale, true spinach, parsley, basil, carrots, beetroot, cabbage, big tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, onions, kohlrabi, fennel and cut flowers. 🌸

🥒 Courgette Appreciation Post 🥒

I think the courgettes deserve a little recognition for their incredible productivity as a plant! 🌱

Any home gardener will know the feeling of apprehension when you realise you may have planted a few too many courgettes. At this time of year, you can quickly find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of fruits! One day there’s a tiny baby courgette, you blink, and suddenly you’re surrounded by whopping marrows because you took a few days off picking. 😂

But really, this productivity should be admired. Before too long, autumn will arrive, the plants will finally give up and those summer courgettes will become a distant memory. And then, of course, we’ll be wishing we had them back!

This year I sowed three successions of courgettes to keep our CSA and farm shop well stocked throughout the summer. The first sowing was made on 21 March on the heated propagation bench and planted out under fleece in the tunnel. They started cropping at the end of May and have been churning out around 2–3 courgettes per plant every week ever since. Those same plants are still producing now, although they’re certainly looking a little tired after all that exertion! 😂

Their stems have become impressively long, with all the old fruiting points visible along them — a record of just how hard they’ve been working.

We made a second succession in the middle tunnel in April, while our outdoor courgettes were only sown on 25 May. At this time of year they grow incredibly quickly and are now right in the prime of production.

So, show your courgettes some love and make the most of these overachievers of the vegetable patch. You’ll miss them when they’re gone!

And if you’re currently surrounded by a courgette glut, here are a few ideas for inspiration:

🧀 Roast courgette quesadillas
🌿 Courgette frittata or quiche
🥒 Courgette fritters
🍲 Cheesy courgette soup
🧀 Stuffed courgettes

And one for later: grate and freeze courgettes in portions to add to soups, curries, sauces, cakes and savoury bakes through the winter.

🥕 Caught red-pawed! 🐾

Pippin has stolen a rather large carrot and, rather than making a getaway, decided his best option was to stay completely still in the market garden and hope nobody noticed him. 😂

Unfortunately, his hiding skills need a little work… That guilty face gave him away, and as soon as he realised he’d been spotted, he dropped the carrot! 🥕🐶

What do you get up to on a Friday night? 🌿💐

We’re busy getting everything ready for a full-on weekend ahead! I’ve got 25 bunches of flowers to arrange, while Michael is busy packing up crates of freshly harvested veg ready for tomorrow.

Growing and selling veg is definitely a lifestyle, not a 9–5 job! There’s always something to harvest, wash, bunch, pack, arrange and load up (and that's after all the work growing it in the first place) — and Friday night is no exception when you’ve got a busy weekend ahead.

Tomorrow we’ll be in two places, so you can find Muchalls Kailyard both at the farm and a little closer to Aberdeen.

🥕 Michael will be at the Bridge of Don Producers Market 9am-12pm, bringing along a selection of our freshly harvested vegetables and flowers.

🌱 Ella will be running the farm shop here at Muchalls Kailyard, open 11am–3pm, with plenty of seasonal veg and flowers to stock up on.
