This was such fantastic feedback shared by one of my lovely customers recently. I had the biggest smile on my face when I received it ☺️

It’s such a privilege to help you select books for your families. Many of my customers have shopped with me for a few years now, so I have watched how your children have progressed through their reading journeys. The transition from picture books to early chapter books and beyond is so exciting 🥰

I always like to keep a stock of amazing sports books in the bookshop. They are such a popular choice for my bespoke boxes. This brilliant combination was for a recent birthday box.

The Incredible Sports series is a great choice for children aged 7 years + 🙌The books are illustrated which keeps the reader engaged, and helps to aid understanding of the text. I love the mix of stories, facts and stats (I have learnt so much from these books 😂) Not to mention the information about events and players, past and present, from the men’s, women’s and para games.

My 8 year old is sports mad and they have been a real hit with him!

If you know a child who would love this box, get in touch today to order yours 📮

Do you have any plans for half-term?

Whether you’re heading off on a journey or not, let me tempt you with a trip to London. It’s 1953, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth is just days away:

“It looked as if the whole world were pouring into the city to see the Queen’s coronation. Smoke billowed up around them like fog as steamships chugged beneath the bridge, their multicoloured flags hailing from countries she didn’t know the names of. Along the streets, every shop was festooned with fluttering red, white and blue bunting. Tourists swarmed everywhere, clutching suitcases, cameras and fluttering maps. Asking questions of bewildered looking police- officers. A sense of tingling anticipation was in the air, giving her goosebumps.”

As soon as I read this amazing paragraph I was instantly transported to London and this vivid scene! That’s the power of a good book, allowing children to experience different times and cultures, through their pages.

I’m only part way through this fantastic middle-grade read, but I’m loving the writing and the amazing setting. And just look at the cover, it’s stunning! It would make such a lovely gift ☺️

If you would like some reading recommendations for over half-term, get in touch and I’d be happy to make some suggestions 🕵🏻‍♀️

I am always on the look-out for birthday gifts that are a little different, both for myself and for my customers. This inspiring activity book fits the bill perfectly.

It features 25 ground-breaking artists from around the world, with step-by-step activities to try out at home.

Features I loved:

🎨The overview of each artist’s style and examples of their work. I was fascinated by some of the sections covered, my favourites were: cave painting, self-portraits, mosaics, block printing and silhouette portraits!

🎨The range of different artists that were included: Van Gogh, Kahlo, Picasso, Monet, Kusama and Warhol are a few of the 25 amazing artists.

🎨The step-by-step instructions are clear and easy to follow. A handy tip is always included to make the process a little easier, especially handy if you’re not a regular crafter.

🎨How inspirational the book is – it really encourages you to give each style a go! It includes background information about the artist and the impact of their work, which is a great starting point for children to find out more.

Graphic novels are such a great choice for readers, helping to build confidence and understanding through their illustrative format. The layout and design are perfect for readers who find large sections of text a little overwhelming. I love used graphic novels with readers to really explore a character in depth, using the illustrations to develop key skills.

Stitch Head is the first book in the best-selling and hilarious Stitch Head series, now published as a graphic novel.

Stitch Head is happy leading a quiet life living in Castle Grotteskew - he hides in the shadows protecting his master, Professor Erasmus, ensuring his almost-human creations remain out of sight. Stitch Head was the professor’s first creation, and his loyalty to his master ties him to the castle. But when a travelling circus ringmaster visits the castle and promises to make Stitch Head a star, will he be tempted out of the shadows?

Stitch Head scored a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me! It’s perfect for readers 8 years + who love graphic novels, or a great suggestion for a reader who is looking to try something new.

Do you ever feel like you read the same books to your kids on repeat?

I do with my youngest! These are his current top requests 👆that we seem to read on rotation.

I know it can sometimes feel repetitive, but there’s actually a lot to be said for re-reading books.

Firstly, it’s a BRILLIANT way to boost reading comprehension. With every read, your child will learn more about the book - making connections, developing a deeper understanding and finding new meaning in the illustrations, diagrams or text.

I used to use this technique a lot during guided reading sessions. Re-reading a text meant we would become familiar with it. With fresh eyes, we would notice something we hadn’t discussed before. This is particularly effective when teaching a new skill, as the children instantly feel more confident because of their familiarity with the text.

Reading a book often is a great way to develop vocabulary and word recognition. Children recognise words in the text and build associations. The more times they hear a word the better! They’re more likely to have a go at using a new word themselves 🙌

If they are reading to you or you are reading to them, being familiar with a story really helps with fluency. They will join in with you as you read along, enjoying retelling the story or sharing the information they have learnt. I used to love seeing my boys reading their favourite stories to their teddies when they were younger. They used to memorise pages or stories that they would then read aloud.

The list of benefits goes on, but all of the above help to develop more confident readers who love reading 🙌☺️so next time your child asks for the same story for the 10th night in a row 🙈 know that you are giving their reading confidence a boost in the process.

I would love to know the books that you re-read in your house, share in the comments below 👇
