Do you have any plans for half-term?
Whether you’re heading off on a journey or not, let me tempt you with a trip to London. It’s 1953, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth is just days away:
“It looked as if the whole world were pouring into the city to see the Queen’s coronation. Smoke billowed up around them like fog as steamships chugged beneath the bridge, their multicoloured flags hailing from countries she didn’t know the names of. Along the streets, every shop was festooned with fluttering red, white and blue bunting. Tourists swarmed everywhere, clutching suitcases, cameras and fluttering maps. Asking questions of bewildered looking police- officers. A sense of tingling anticipation was in the air, giving her goosebumps.”
As soon as I read this amazing paragraph I was instantly transported to London and this vivid scene! That’s the power of a good book, allowing children to experience different times and cultures, through their pages.
I’m only part way through this fantastic middle-grade read, but I’m loving the writing and the amazing setting. And just look at the cover, it’s stunning! It would make such a lovely gift ☺️
