Touching homebuilt compositions from celebrated American novelist, playwright and poet Ishmael Reed, channelling a long life immersed in jazz culture.  A joint in-house production from All Night Flight and NYC-based label Reading Group / derek b .

You’re never too old to learn something new.  Reed credits bebop with keeping him and his friends out of reform school because they were too busy listening to records at each other’s houses to get into trouble.  Finding fame as a distinguished writer, he found his way back to music circuitously, eventually taking the plunge at aged 60 to study jazz piano.  Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006 he hastily assembled a quintet to fulfil a lifelong ambition of recording an album. He made the record but thankfully he didn’t succumb to his illness   Cash-strapped during COVID, he became a composer to save on money for his own plays, enlisting his daughter Tennessee as the narrator.

These humble origins and a genuine love (and natural talent) for music are what underpins The Hands Of Grace.  Consisting of works written for Reed’s play ‘The Slave Who Loved Caviar’ alongside new original compositions, it brings in close friends and family to accompany his casual, unvarnished playing style that’s so genuinely heartfelt it feels as if you could be sat alongside them in their living room.  The music carries a lived-in simplicity yet it also holds something ambiguous that draws it away from the predictable. Music papers rustle, a living room chair is dragged up to the keys whilst Reed’s wife Carla contributes violin and daughter Tennessee recites her poetry on standout ‘How High The Moon’.  This is a poignant family affair with no-one left out, ending on a touching tribute and voicemail from their late daughter Timothy.

Ever since it first appeared on CD The Hands Of Grace has become a staple. A record to return to, a uniquely personal tribute, a document of working method, a lifelong passion finally coming to fruition…(Mint / new - with free DL & double sided insert - shops pls ask for wholesale)

Omg, it’s The Fulmars debut album!  Unbeatable sad-sack lofi to burn a hole in your heart.  We’ve never quite figured out who The Fulmars actually are.  We stocked (and loved) their 7” a few years ago and their coffin-closing track on the Blackest Ever Black compilation was on repeat for weeks after first hearing.  Alas, this mysterious duo / group (?) / solo artist has finally fruited their debut LP and it’s all we could ever wish for.  Deliberately quite crap songs but in the most endearing way, cheap lo-fi scuzz, downer rhythm box and pretty strange / shy vocals.  Hypnotic and full of charm, a blessing for all small-town weirdos who had the best music taste in school but no friends.  Occasionally the rhythm breaks, a keyboard melody comes in and its like… yes.  Whole-heartedly TIPPED.  (Mint / New - with insert).

Vital reproduction of the mysterious Neapolitan multi-instrumentalist Luciano Cilio’s solitary masterpiece Dialoghi Del Presente.

A record, or more an eternal statement, that’s long been held in a position extreme reverie for those entrenched in the world of the Italian avant-garde for a variety of reasons. Firstly, few people seem to have even seen let alone own the original, yet more importantly the music itself. Cilio’s minimalist compositions are crushingly beautiful and deeply entrenched in a sadness so tangible it really runs a current of electricity through the nervous system. The space between the notes carries great weight and sucks us into his private universe where guitar stings flutter around lonely piano keys, sighing woodwind and pensive strings. There’s few records we’ve encountered so unbearably tender where it really feels as if the artist is attempting to communicate (or better exorcise) an excruciating sadness through the only means they know, their music. Cilio sadly took his own life at the age of 33, leaving this behind as his epitaph. Now at long last faithfully reproduced in all its glory - the real deal. (Mint / New)

Engrossing, multi-layered musical composting from multi-instrumentalist Shin-Ya Ohno’s solo KiMiMi project released via the esteemed in-house label arm of Tokyo’s Pianola Records, Conatala.

It was probably a few years ago now that we first encountered KiMiMi’s work via a self-released cassette with an unpronounceable name. It felt totally original - a disorientating array of culturally and aesthetically disconnected field recordings and deliberately clashing acoustic elements that congealed into a wonderful mess with a life of its own.

ИМА (IMA) is grounded in the everyday field recordings captured over a period of time in the experimental Arimasuton Building, the ongoing sounds of construction, people living, laughing and inhabiting a space, fortified and overlayed with KiMiMi’s wonderful nomadic folk additions. It’s like asking, why paint on a blank canvas? Incorporating the chance elements and unexpected unities of sound reveals hidden harmonies, uncovering strange new sonic journeys. The wistful nature occasionally recalls the sound works of Lovely Music alumni “Blue” Gene Tyranny, whilst the cosy yet off-kilter arrangements evoke favourites from Woo, Jam Money or Tori Kudo. Ultimately, it’s a sound project rooted in nostalgia and the passing of time, underpinned by a dazzlingly diverse tapestry of multi-instrumental folk music that showcases a brave artist with a unique voice. A beguiling trip unlike any other! (Mint / New - with free DL)

Intense cerebral deep tissue massage from pioneering American composer David Tudor for the sainted Lovely Music label. Despite its namesake and releasing a huge amount of unfathomably pretty music, not all the Lovely music was what we’d typically call lovely. Tudor’s circuit bending electronics were recorded in 1970s and is comprised of various fidgety electronic pulses that splutter at various intervals, eventually interlocking into a strange hypnotic cadence before Taj Mahal Traveller Takahisa Kosugi arrives with his electrified violin and casts the piece into the stratosphere. Due to the very basic raw elements employed here, it’d be fair to classic this piece as early minimalism, yet the quite confrontational textures and absolute atonality of the music distances itself from the shiny worlds of Glass, Reich ++. An immerse masterpiece of rough, raw home-brewed electronics. Rare!!! (NM)

Sublime, warm-hued guitar soli Portland’s Bob Desaulniers - a genuinely jaw-dropping and inexplicably accomplished solo album recorded in very humble surroundings.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that there are people of extreme talent, quietly sat at home, writing and recording their own music, worlds away from the commercial music industrial complex and humbly sharing it with anyone who wants to listen. Desaulniers is exactly that. On first hearing Frames Within Frames, you could easily mistake it for lost and mysterious acoustic grail - think Gimmer Nicholson’s sole late 60’s LP Christopher Idylls or Rolando Chia’s stripped-back Sara Juega Y… - leaving it hard to place on the time spectrum. Yet Desaulniers doesn’t rely on any obfuscation tactics here, his majestic finger-picking is out front and centre, crafting wonderfully lyrical phrases that evoke scenes of golden hour prairies. The unadorned compositions often have a long cyclical arc, recalling Uematsu’s self-contained sound-world miniatures, always eventually coming back to find themselves. It’s not everyday you’re met with something so brilliantly accomplished and unassuming - a total future classic. (Mint / New - with free DL).
