‘Imagine sitting at a table in a café waiting for the love of your life to arrive but instead of them, in walks their lover. They sit down and wait for the love of their life, and in walks...and so on.
In Holly Pester’s unique lyric, the café space is rendered as a fantastical structure through which to explore pressurised subjectivities in the shape of a worker, a lover, a friend, an artist, and a researcher.
On Thursday 9th July, we’re hosting Holly Pester; poet, novelist and scholar in conversation with Andrew Biswell, professor of modern literature at MMU and Director of The International Anthony Burgess Foundation.
In 2024 we hosted Pester for her book ‘The Lodgers’. We are very happy to welcome her back to Stockport, this time to chat all about her new poetry collection - Cafés, published by the wonderful Fitzcarraldo Editions.
Tickets for the event are £6 and include a free drink on arrival.
Doors from 6.30, event starts at 7.

WOAHHHHH woah woah. What’s this? Possibly the biggest smile induced in 2026 so far (apart from possibly the birth of our second child?) was the announcement that Record Culture magazine is back. Back after what feels like a long time. In that time we’ve been asked uncountable times what happened, and if there’s anything else to fill the gap. There wasn’t. But that’s ok because it’s back. Ok you may now buy your copy immediately. Ta.

One our latest favourites, in from the relatively well known North American city New York City, it’s funny without being whacky, informative without being boring and DIY enough without being rubbish.
Actual articles you can read about being actually really really in to things instead of just buying in, fits on some great looking actual people, and lists of actual opinions on things like good books and music.
A real keeper, we got the last copies and we’re willing to share them with you.

The new Never Too Small is here and it’s obviously great so we’ll get that bit out of the way first. Then we can move on to mirrors and funny chairs and cycling in Sweden and architectural urban improv in Bangkok. It’s just the best if you’re in to really good design and small spaces and being a basically happy individual.
We also have a couple of previous issues in so you can get your collection off the ground.
