So, as I have a lot of followers on FB for the Bookshop I'm going to give a shameless plug for something else. Some of you will already know, but I don't confine myself to selling books: most weekends you will see me DJing in our fantastic local pubs, especially The Royal Oak and Nelson's Head. And this coming Saturday I'm doing the Silent Disco for The Corn Exchange. If you've never been to one before or want to know how it works you get a pair of headphones at the door and choose yourself between 3 different music channels: pop/disco (which is a mixture of 80s, 90s & 2000 dance music), soul & Motown, plus rock/metal. I'll even put a fourth channel on in the room so it's not actually silent. The last one back in February was fab. I would love to see lots of lovely people there. It's a very reasonable ticket price and although you can pay on the door it would help greatly if you booked online. That way we can see how many people to expect on the night and, very importantly, how much beer to order! Hope to see you there!

Tickets are now available for Silent Disco! at St Ives Corn Exchange, Saint Ives on Sat 2 May 2026 at 8:00PM. Click the link for further information and to secure your tickets now!

I just finished this lovely vintage crime novel. Set in the fictional Fisher College, Cambridge in 1939. The original version was published in 1945 (so it does include some political incorrectness!). I can never resist a detective novel that includes a map or plan, and this book has one! And so nice to see plenty references to our local area, Cambridge street names, a visit to Newmarket. It even mentions St Ives. And of course a very civilised murder...

(so far) this week has been the poorest I've had since I opened the bookshop almost 2 years ago. I don't know how other shops are finding things at the moment and if it's down to 'Trump's war' in the gulf. It's a worrying time. Selling books online has become increasingly difficult due to market saturation, high postage, packaging and commission fees from online marketplaces. If you buy a book online for, say, £3.50, the bookseller makes almost zero profit. Here in the shop paperback fiction books are just £2 each: That's better for the customer and much better for the retailer. We are fortunate to live in a town where so many things are available from our local shops. Do think of us if you need something to read, something to wear, that tin of paint, a present for a loved-one...Think local!
