This is your invitation to come to South Shields Market on Saturday 22nd August.

Our ambition is simple: to create a thriving Saturday market that celebrates local businesses, supports independent traders and gives more people a reason to visit our town centre.

We're growing steadily, bringing in new traders while supporting the businesses that have been here for years.

This weekend - DJ Jimi Dingwall will be creating our market soundtrack with good vibes! 🎶

Pink Lane Bakery are back with us for the next two Saturdays - we know how much you loved them when they traded last month - with their artisan bread and pastries.

We are also welcoming some new traders to South Shields Market including handcrafted burgers from street food trader The Melted Bun, and dipped cheesecakes by Not A Lie Delicacies.

And, don't forget that we are running a competition with throughout the summer where you can win a fully loaded card to spend at the fair - in return for your Stories From Shields! (See the pinned post on our page for more info!)

This Saturday, your Market Square gets a soundtrack.

Ruby Kelly is playing South Shields Market Square from 12:30 - live, free, and open to all.

Welsh-born and Sunderland-based, Ruby writes with folk and Americana in her bones and a real warmth about people, place and the ties between them.

She's supported The Levellers, The Futureheads and Ferocious Dog, and Crack Magazine has called her one of the finest songwriters working in the region.

She's no stranger to us, either. Her single Born and Raised began life as a commission for the Local Heroes Podcast and grew into the soundtrack for our Out and About series - a love letter to the North East, and to the city that welcomed her with open arms.

Now she's bringing it to Shields.

Why this matters to us.

Local Heroes isn't here to just run a market. What we do is grassroots, place-based storytelling - and Ruby is exactly that.

A songwriter who moved here, fell for the place, and wrote it into her music.

Putting her on the square on a Saturday afternoon isn't entertainment laid on top of a market.

It's the same thing we do in film and podcasts, done live, in the open, for free, in the middle of town.

It sits alongside the other half of the job: a market pitch is still one of the best low-risk places to start a business, and we want Shields to be somewhere an idea can be tested and grown.

Culture and enterprise on the same square, week by week.

Building a market takes time. It isn't done in a week, or a month.

Every new stall, every act on the square, every reason to stop and stay - it gets built slowly, and it gets built together.

It's nearly time for our weekly Saturday Market at South Shields market square!

South Shields Market has been part of our community for generations, and we are building on that legacy by celebrating local businesses, supporting independent traders and giving more people a reason to visit our town centre.

This Saturday, we welcome 🥥 Coconuts Nature, a family-ran business based in South Shields that sell handcrafted coconut bowls, cups, cutlery and candles. As well as street food trader 🔥 Tandoori Naan Hut who will be serving up loaded naans, masala fries and fresh chaats!

We also are happy to have local South Tyneside businesses 🥚 Hillhead Eggs and 🍎 City Boxes with us at every Saturday market in August! So come along for fresh fruit, veg and eggs!
