We hope everyone’s having a cracking Friday and looking forward to the weekend! 💙

Here’s a bit of important local news from South Shields this afternoon…

🌉 £21 MILLION BID SUBMITTED TO REPLACE HEUGH STREET BRIDGE

South Tyneside Council has submitted a bid to the Department for Transport’s Structures Fund in the hope of securing funding for a complete replacement of Heugh Street Bridge.

The bridge has been closed to vehicles since November 2025 after structural concerns were identified during detailed inspections.

If the bid is successful, around £21 million could be invested into replacing the bridge completely, allowing traffic to return to River Drive and providing a long-term solution for the route.

Before it closed, the bridge was carrying around 5,000 vehicles every day, so we know plenty of local residents and businesses will be keeping a close eye on this one.

🚶 Pedestrian access remains open, while the bridge continues to undergo enhanced monitoring and regular inspections.

Council Leader Cllr Paul Mackings said the bid is an important step towards restoring traffic access, improving connectivity and supporting future economic growth in the area.

📅 The Department for Transport is expected to announce the outcome of the funding bid in autumn 2026.

🎶 Bents Park Live 2026 hailed a huge success! 🎶

This year’s Sunday Concerts have been praised by the Mayor of South Tyneside after thousands of people enjoyed three huge days of live music at Bents Park.

Joe McElderry, Martin Fry ABC, Nuromantica and Judge Jules headlined the 2026 programme, with more than 19,500 tickets sold and an estimated 23,000 people attending across the three events.

This was the first year South Tyneside Council moved away from the traditional free-entry format and introduced ticket charges for the concerts. Despite the change — and some less-than-perfect weather on one of the dates — the events continued to attract large crowds to the South Shields seafront.

Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Stan Wildhirt, described the concerts as a much-loved part of the borough’s summer programme, bringing local residents and visitors together to enjoy live music in a fantastic coastal setting.

He also thanked the performers, event staff, volunteers, partners and everyone who attended and helped create such a brilliant atmosphere throughout the three weekends.

❤️ Money was also raised for the Mayor’s Charity Fund, supporting several important local causes:

• Veterans for Veterans in Care
• Pawz for Thought
• The Toby Henderson Trust at The Autism Hub
• Escape Intervention Services Ltd

🌤️ Good afternoon, South Tyneside! 💙

We completely missed the morning rush today… mainly because we were too busy collecting breakfast from Les's Deli. 😂

There are no photos of the breakfast because, honestly, it was demolished before we even had the chance to get the camera out. Safe to say, it was very good. 🤣

There were plenty of delicious-looking cakes on offer though, so we did at least manage to get some evidence of those before they disappeared too. 🍰

Today has been another busy one behind the scenes. We’ve been updating profiles and adding new local businesses to the platform, including some new local sellers.

There are a few more still to come over the next day or two as South Tyneside Online keeps expanding, growing and becoming bigger all the time. 💙

Now for a serious question…

As many of you know, we’ve got Colin at Tedco LTD, Barbara at Invest South Tyneside, and a few other people who keep telling us:

Imagine thinking you’re going to have a nice quiet Sunday evening… then a mixture of 17 men, women and children suddenly walk through the door asking for a table! 🤣

Our extended Dutch family were over visiting South Tyneside for a family reunion, and we were struggling to find somewhere that could accommodate us at such short notice.

Not only did the team at Italian & Spanish make it happen, but the food was absolutely incredible and the hospitality was second to none. Every single one of us was made to feel welcome.

Thank you so much for looking after us. Businesses like yours are exactly what make South Tyneside such a fantastic place. ❤️👏
