Arts & Crafts Sussex Chair

Attributed to Ford Madox Brown for Morris & Co., c.1880–1900.

A classic Sussex chair with ebonised frame and hand-rushed seat, embodying the simplicity and craftsmanship at the heart of the Arts & Crafts movement. Inspired by traditional English country furniture, the design features the characteristic turned spindle construction, central roundel back splat and woven rush seat that made Sussex chairs one of Morris & Co.’s most enduring creations.

The rush seat has been traditionally renewed, while the frame retains a rich aged patina that speaks to its history and continued use. Equally at home in a period interior or a contemporary setting.

Height 84cm | Width 43cm | Depth 41cm

Fine Arts & Crafts Glasgow School hall seat, attributed to Wylie & Lochhead, c.1910.

A beautifully proportioned example in solid oak, featuring an arched crest rail with a carved seed pod motif and elegant uprights with circular finials. Raised on distinctive sled feet and incorporating a discreet drawer, this piece perfectly balances form and function.

Rich in colour with a wonderful aged patina, it’s a versatile piece—ideal for a hallway, window setting or as a statement accent in a considered interior.

A quietly striking example of Glasgow Arts & Crafts design.

Something a little different coming to Wrest Park… 👀

I’ll be opening the old larder room in the courtyard as a small antique space for a few hours on Sunday 24th May. a mix of furniture, decorative pieces, and smaller finds.

I’ve had a few visitors pop in recently and the feedback’s been really encouraging, so I thought it’d be great to open it up properly and see how it goes.

If you’re visiting Wrest Park that day, feel free to come and have a look, it’s just a short wander from the main house.

For sale! 19th Century Victorian Mahogany Veneer Open Bookcase

A well-proportioned 19th century Victorian open bookcase, finished in rich mahogany veneer and offering a clean, elegant silhouette suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.

The upper section is fitted with a series of open shelves, ideal for books or display. The shelves are later replacements, thoughtfully made with veneered edges to complement the original construction and maintain a cohesive appearance throughout.

The interior has been refinished in Bronze Red by Little Greene, giving a bold and sophisticated contrast to the warm mahogany tones while enhancing the depth and visual impact of the piece.

Below, a single full-width drawer provides useful storage, fitted with simple turned wooden k***s and sitting above a shaped plinth base that adds to the bookcase’s balanced stance.

The mahogany veneer shows attractive figuring and a pleasing aged patina, with the piece overall presenting well and remaining both practical and decorative.

Superb Early 19th Century Coromandel Writing Slope / Campaign Stationery Cabinet

A beautiful early 19th-century coromandel writing slope, unusually configured as a compact stationery/campaign cabinet. The exterior shows striking, ribboned coromandel grain with a rich, deep polish and retains its original brass side handles and key.

Opening the lid reveals a wonderfully fitted interior with multiple small drawers, pigeonholes, and brass-bound compartments—classic high-quality cabinetmaker’s work from the period. The slope opens fully to expose the original tooled leather writing surface with fine gilt lines and a working lock and key. Beneath the skiver are further hidden storage areas, typical of travelling writing boxes of this calibre.

A scarce form, desirable both for collectors and for interior display. Solid, clean, and complete, with honest signs of age and use that add to its authenticity. 19thCenturyAntiques
