“I love birds. I think birds are fabulous. They make me so happy.” — Bill Oddie 🐦💚

Today’s Sunday nature quote is a little different.

This week we said goodbye to Bill Oddie — naturalist, birdwatcher, writer and broadcaster, who spent so much of his life encouraging people to look a little more closely at the wildlife around them.

For many of us, programmes such as Springwatch helped turn an ordinary bird in the garden, a nest in the hedgerow or a walk through the countryside into something worth stopping for.

And perhaps that is one of the loveliest legacies anyone who loves nature can leave behind: helping other people fall in love with it too. 🌿

Thank you, Bill, for the enthusiasm, humour and genuine love of wildlife you shared with so many. 🤍

See it. Love it. Protect it.

🦦 The Eurasian Otter — Lutra lutra 🌿

One of Britain’s most wonderful river mammals, the Eurasian otter can be found around rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and even parts of our coastline.

Otters are beautifully adapted for life in and around water, with streamlined bodies, webbed feet and incredibly sensitive whiskers that help them detect movement beneath the surface.

After suffering serious declines in Britain during the 20th century, otters have made an encouraging comeback in many areas — a wonderful example of what can happen when waterways and habitats are given the protection they need. 💚

They’re still surprisingly difficult to spot, though. Otters are often most active around dusk and dawn, so sometimes the only clues they leave behind are footprints, tracks or other signs along the riverbank.

This is my latest Creature Candy Eurasian otter. 🦦🎨

Have you ever been lucky enough to see a wild otter?

Your Weekend Wildlife Challenge 🌿🐝🦋

Sometimes the loveliest wildlife encounters happen when we simply slow down and start looking.

This weekend, step outside — into the garden, a local park, woodland or even just along your street — and see how many little signs of nature you can discover.

Can you find a bee buzzing amongst the flowers? 🐝
A butterfly resting in the sunshine? 🦋
Three different birds? 🐦
Perhaps a spider’s web sparkling in the morning light? 🕸️

You don’t need to travel somewhere wild to connect with nature. There’s an entire miniature world happening around us every day — we just have to notice it. 💚

How many can you tick off this weekend?
Tell me what you spot below! 👇🌿

The Black-tailed Godwit 🤎🌿

Elegant, graceful and instantly recognisable by its long legs and straight bill, the Black-tailed Godwit is one of Britain’s most beautiful wading birds. It feeds by probing deep into soft mud with its long bill, searching for worms, insects and other tiny creatures hidden beneath the surface.

Every spring and autumn, thousands of Black-tailed Godwits gather on wetlands, estuaries and coastal marshes as they migrate across Europe. Their spectacular flocks are one of the highlights of Britain’s wetlands.

Once on the brink of disappearing as a breeding bird in the UK, conservation efforts have helped the Black-tailed Godwit begin to recover. Protecting wetlands and carefully managing breeding sites gives these elegant birds a chance to thrive once again.

💚 Every healthy wetland helps support these remarkable travellers.

Have you ever seen a Black-tailed Godwit? Let me know where you spotted one!

🌿 Nature really is one of the best medicines.

Did you know that scientists have found spending time in nature can help reduce stress, lift our mood and improve our overall wellbeing?

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be a grand adventure. A gentle walk through the woods, sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, listening to birdsong, or simply noticing the flowers around you can all help your mind slow down and reset.

In a world that always seems to be rushing, nature reminds us to pause, breathe and reconnect.

Today, why not spend just 10 minutes outside? You might be surprised how much lighter you feel. 💚

What’s your favourite place to escape into nature? I’d love to hear where you find your little moment of calm. 🌿

🦌 Meet Britain’s largest native land mammal – the magnificent Red Deer. 🍂

Graceful, powerful and surprisingly elusive, red deer have roamed our woodlands, moorlands and hillsides for thousands of years. A fully grown stag can stand over a metre tall at the shoulder and grow an impressive set of antlers, which are shed and regrown every single year.

Perhaps the most spectacular time to see them is during the autumn rut, when stags compete for the attention of females. Their deep, echoing roars can be heard across the landscape as they defend their harems and display their strength.

Although they are widespread across parts of the UK, red deer need large, connected habitats where they can roam freely. Protecting our woodlands, heathlands and uplands helps ensure these magnificent animals continue to thrive for generations to come.

I hope this painting captures just a little of the quiet beauty and dignity of this incredible species. ❤️

Have you ever been lucky enough to see a red deer in the wild? Let me know where in the comments! 🦌🌿

A little glimpse behind the scenes at Creature Candy 🤍🎨

I’ve been quietly working on this beautiful mountain hare, building up the soft layers of watercolour and all those tiny details that bring its character to life.

There’s something so calming about watching an illustration slowly emerge from the page — from the first light washes to the final delicate brushstrokes.

I can’t wait to show you the finished piece soon. What do you think of it so far? 🌿
