The team pursuit has always looked like track cycling at its most obedient.

Four riders in line. Four kilometres. No wasted movement. No place to hide.

But the rulebook leaves a strange little gap inside the event.

Four riders start. Only three have to finish.

Our latest TrackCycling.org piece looks at what might still be hiding inside that gap. Not as a gimmick, but as a serious performance question.

Could one rider be built to launch the first kilometre rather than survive the fourth?

Could a team stop treating the race as a clean 4 km time trial and go hunting for the catch instead?

Are pursuit bikes being designed as individual aerodynamic objects, when the event is really one moving four-rider system?

And if the event is called a "team" pursuit, should all four riders have to finish?

The team pursuit looks finished because everyone recognises its shape. It may not be finished at all.
