Fontana Modern Masters, first published in 1970. The covers of the initial set of books in the series featured the work of artist Oliver Bevan, who at the time was influenced by OpArt.
Bevan's book covers are designed so they can be arranged together to create larger pieces of composite art.

Edward Lear was born on this day, 12th May, in 1812. The youngest surviving child of the Lear family of twenty-one children, he was raised by an older sister. As well being an illustrator, Lear was also an accomplished landscape painter and ornithological artist who had a species of macaw named after him.

In his introduction to this 1996 Folio edition of 'Complete Nonsense', Quentin Blake describes Lear's illustrations as
"…the drawings of someone who knows about drawing... at home with the pen." Blake writes that Lear's drawings are "tiny, vital, expressive works" with lines created by "a sort of slow-motion pen slash".

"The past is not a prologue to the present; it is the present – morphed a bit, stretched, distorted, and with very different emphasis. It’s a structurally similar, though very much contorted, version of the present. Therefore, in a sense, time – history – can, at least in our heads, flow in either direction, because deeply, structurally nothing has really changed. We think we’re going in a line through time, making progress, advancing, but we might be going in circles.”

May 5th entry from 'The Diary of a Young Lady of Fashion 1764-65'
"I own I had doubts as to whether my gowns would be very dowdy…I shall be in need of a complete New wardrobe before I am fit to appear in Town. The Sacque it would seem is all the Mode, but Hoops are no longer worn so big."

Initially published as rediscovered writing from the 18th century, 'The Diary of a Young Lady of Fashion 1764-65' was actually written in the 1920s by 19-year-old Magdalen King-Hall, who wrote it ‘as an escape from the boredom of living at a select seaside resort’.

Two Penguin editions of Jamaica Inn: the 1967 copy cost 3 shillings and sixpence and the post-decimal 1974 copy cost 35p.
The cover art for the 1967 edition is the work of Italian commercial artist Renato Fratini (1932 – 1973). His artwork will be familiar from James Bond and Carry On film posters as well as from paperback book covers of the 1960s.

“In mid-water, not twenty feet from the bank and facing away from me, hung the dark mass of an immense carp...it had a kind of solemn majesty that befitted a lord of the lake.”

“Surrealism is the most important art movement of recent times, and 2024 is officially its centenary year. The usual way of marking such a milestone might be to offer biographies of 100 surrealists, but in keeping with the perverse spirit of the movement, this book offers 101.”
Desmond Morris died this week, aged 98. Although best-known as a zoologist, Morris was also an artist, and this was his final publication.
