It's been a busy week this week for various reasons but here is a beautiful old belt repair that came in the other day.
STORY TIME!!
A lady brought me her dad's old Scottish deerskin belt that had split after something like 3 or 4 decades of use. Apparently he and his wife had seen the belt being made and so it carries alot of sentimental value. Unfortunately as he had lost alot of weight the belt had become too big for him so he had roughly cut some more holes in the belt that had led it to break over time.
I carefully separated the layers either side of the break and removed the broken middle layer of leather. I then glued a thin piece of leather split (kinda like suede) to act as new reinforcement. Folding the split and gluing again added to the strength before flying the rear section back into place and redoing the stitching as best I could. I re punched the holes with a proper tool so the belt can be used again if the chap so wishes.
Those who have followed me for a while know I love working on these old, vintage, sentimental pieces, trying to restore and repair as best as I can and give some more life to an old leather item that means so much to someone!!
