The Merciless Ones by Narima Forna.

I have just finished reading The Merciless Ones. I absolutely loved Narima Forna’s first book in the series ‘The Gilded Ones, but this book has left me slightly confused to be honest.. The end is really quite philosophical and I thought quite difficult to follow.
However, this is definitely not going to stop me from reading the next book in the series. I need to know what happens to Deka and if she will find her mother and how her relationship with Keta will turn out.

⭐️The Gilded ones by Namina Forna⭐️

I read this book as part of the April book club .anonymous and I am so glad I did.

It’s absolutely epic!!! It’s a fantasy novel, the 1st in a trilogy and I think there are already plans to make it into a film. I read it on kindle unfortunately, because the book itself, is a piece of art.

📚Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in Otera, a deeply patriarchal ancient kingdom, where a woman’s worth is tied to her purity and she must bleed to prove it. But when Deka bleeds gold - the colour of impurity, of a demon -she faces a consequence worse than death. She is saved by a mysterious woman who tells Deka of of her true nature; she is an Alaki, a near immortal with exceptional gifts. The stranger offers her a choice: fight for the emperor, with others like her, or be destroyed. 📚

This book deals with lots of important topics such a patriarchy, feminism, racism , sexism and genocide, so it’s not for the fainthearted, I would recommend it for readers 13+, but do go out and buy it or order the book in one of our book boxes!!!

The Valley of lost Secrets by

I’ve been dying to read this book because I have heard so many great things about it and I finished it one day! 🙈

📚When Jimmy is evacuated in 1939 to a small village in Wales, it couldn’t be more different from London. All the other evacuees seem to fit in straight away but Jimmy feels out of place and just wants to be back in London with his dad and his Nan.

But then he finds a skull hidden in a tree, and suddenly the valley is more frightening than the war. Who can Jimmy trust? His brother is too little; his best friend Duff has changed. Then he finds an ally he never expects.📚

This book is absolutely lovely. It’s full of adventure, mystery but also talks about what it would have been like to be far away from home for the children who were evacuated during the war and that all children dealt with it differently. It is a very heartfelt wartime story and deals with friendship and kindness and all the characters are just lovely! Highly Recommend!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s a great book for 9+ readers and ideal for children in year 5,6,7.

🎥 📚Moxie by Amy Poehler📚 🎥

This is such a good YA book! It’s all about girl power, girls finding their own voice and girls standing up for each other.
Viv is fed up with the way boys treat girls at her school and inspired by her punk rock Riot mum, she decides to do something about it and starts a girl revolution.

The movie of Moxie is out on Netflix and we watched it as our Friday family movie night. 🍿 We loved it! Really good for the teenage son to watch as well, most of it went over the little one’s head, so that’s fine because I think it is a 12 rated movie and he is only 7, story of his life🤣.

📚Book Review📚

Gut Feelings by is another great book published by .
This book is a novel in verse and what I think is so clever about this book is that the story is not limited by the amount of words at all, in fact I think because it is written in verse it makes the story so much more powerful.
This book is an autobiographical coming of age story exploring chronic invisible illness, LGTBQ and discovering who you are. It’s quite a gritty read and I would definitely recommend it for older YA readers, but it is such a good book and I can’t recommend it enough. Especially if you don’t have a lot of time to read or you’re not avid reader, this book is brilliant. I read it in two evenings and it really made an impact.
It’s also a great book for school libraries to include for their LGBTQ reads and verse novels.
I will definitely be recommending this book to a lot of students!!

Thank you to for gifting me this book!!

📚BookReview📚

Wow, what can I say.. I absolutely loved The Territory by . To me, it felt a bit like Hunger Games meets teen version of the Handmaid’s Tale.
This is the first book in a trilogy.
It’s a very thought provoking book and addresses topics such as our education system (which as somebody from the continent still completely baffles me) elitism, global warming and a controlling government. It’s dystopian teen fiction at it’s best and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I can think of lots of teens who will love this!!

It’s 2059 and Noa Blake is a Norm, which means a normal child as opposed to Childe’s or Freakoids who have undergone surgery and can now upload any information they need and don’t have to study for school like Norms have to. In order to stay in The Territory all children at the age of 15 need to sit a test called the TAA, if you fail this test, you will get sent to the Wetlands. All that is known about the Wetlands is that there is no chance of survival..The Childe’s have a much bigger chance of passing this test which Noa finds completely unfair, but then there are many things in The Territory that are completely unfair and wrong...

📚Book Review📚

I have been so busy with going back to work at school and working on The Book Gang, that I wasn’t getting much reading done, but I’m back!!

Mina and the Undead
I haven’t read a lot of Books about Vampires, which as funny because I did my dissertation for my English lit degree on Bram Stoker’s Dracula😉
In the book there are lots of references to other vampire stories and horror movies such as Dracula which I really liked. The book is set in the 90s and the references to the 90s made me feel quite nostalgic.

Mina is 17 and she goes on holiday to visit her sister in New Orleans. Mina and her sister Libby have a difficult relationship, mainly because their mother’s mysterious disappearance. In New Orleans all is not what it seems and strange murders start taking place and Mina and her Sister seem to be at the center of these killings. I think the Gothic and horror element have been handled very well in this YA book. Girls who liked Buffy and The Twilight series will love this book. I have the feeling it might be the first in a series because of the ending?

Thank you to for gifting me this.

Mina and the Undead
Pages: 294
Suitable: 15+ (I’m being conservative here, it is quite gory at times, but if you like that, you’ll love this book)
