I’ve just finished refinishing the fallboard on this beautiful Blüthner grand. The original brass inlay had developed a “halo” effect and was looking rather tired, but I’ve carefully preserved it and brought it back to life under fresh coats of traditional shellac French polish.

“Rich and warm” are the words most pianists use to describe the tone of a Blüthner piano — and they’re just as fitting for the depth and colour of this wood grain. It’s been incredibly satisfying to watch the clarity and warmth emerge with each layer of shellac, and I’m really looking forward to returning this to its owner.

This week I undertook some further training at the Royal Academy of Music in London where I had the opportunity to fine tune my regulating and servicing skills with Doug Chapman, their Head of Piano Technical Services.

The Academy really is an incredible institution and has over 150 pianos for its students to use; in the picture below I am working on a fantastic Yamaha SE122.

To get the best out of your piano it should not only be tuned but also serviced and regulated; doing so can vastly improve the touch, responsiveness and dynamic range of your instrument.

Today I attended to a fully restored 1850’s Erard concert grand piano which was played by famed composer Berlioz during the instrument’s previous life in Paris.

The piano had suffered a broken Agraffe.

To fix the problem I drilled out the remnants of the broken part before recutting new threads into the plate using a tap and die. I then replaced the Agraffe and fit new strings.

I was really happy to put this fine instrument back into business and look forward to revisiting for a follow up tune soon.

Today I’m replacing all 88 hammer butt flanges from a Yamaha U1. Do you have a Yamaha or other Asian piano from the 70’s and 80’s with poor repetition of the keys? It’s most likely due to the deterioration of the loop cords on the hammer butt flanges. The best remedy is to replace all of the flanges; in this case I am using parts supplied by Yamaha that have an improved design.

A lovely Blüthner style IV tuned and voiced following delivery from Sherwood Phoenix pianos. Blüthners are known for their rich and warm tone and are a particular favourite of mine to tune. This particular instrument was no exception and its new owner will surely enjoy playing this wonderful piano for years to come.
