Some pieces don’t just arrive at The Loft… they move in.

This little SylvaC squirrel jug — model 4241, made in England — has been spotted settling quite comfortably on our shelf this week. Tail curled, acorn in hand, perched on its tree‑trunk home like it’s found the perfect spot to squirrel away for autumn.

SylvaC made these woodland characters in the mid‑20th century, firing them in the Staffordshire potteries where decorators added those soft glazes and gentle details that make each piece feel alive. They were never meant to be serious ornaments — they were meant to bring a bit of whimsy into the home. A tiny woodland visitor on your mantelpiece. A creature keeping watch from the windowsill. A jug that looked like it might scamper off if you turned your back.

And honestly… this one looks like it’s planning to stay.

You can imagine where it once lived:
on a 1950s hearth beside a vase of dried grasses, or tucked on a sideboard next to the “good” ornaments, or maybe even holding a stem picked from the garden — doing its best to look useful while mostly just being adorable.

SylvaC animals have a way of carrying stories.
They remind us of childhood homes, grandparents’ living rooms, and the gentle woodland palette of mid‑century décor. They’re playful without being silly, sentimental without being sugary — and always full of character.

So if you’re passing The Loft Vintage & Antiques this week, don’t be surprised if you see a squirrel peering out from the shelf. He’s made himself quite at home… and he’s definitely eyeing up a few acorns for winter.

Available now at Jones & Wells, The Loft Vintage & Antiques.
Thursday opening hours: 10 am – 4 pm.

Some pieces don’t just carry age — they carry a sense of home.

This small blue‑and‑white condiment tureen is one of those quiet treasures. A modest little pot that once lived on a Sunday table, filled with mustard or mint sauce, its leaf‑finial lid lifted by hands that knew the rhythm of family meals.

Its registered design — ALLIE’S, No. 646321 — places it in the mid‑20th century, when English ceramics were made in small, hardworking factories across the Midlands and Staffordshire. Places where decorators smoothed transfer patterns onto biscuit‑fired pots, and kilns glowed through the night. Most of those factories are gone now, but pieces like this remain as gentle reminders of them.

You can picture where it sat:
on a polished sideboard,
beside a roast on a Sunday,
or tucked neatly in a pantry with other small serving dishes.
Not grand, not rare — just part of the comforting fabric of everyday life.

That’s what makes it special.
It doesn’t shout.
It simply remembers.

A small tureen with a big sense of home — and a quiet echo of the kitchens, families, and factories that shaped mid‑century Britain.

Available now at Jones & Wells, The Loft Vintage & Antiques.

We’ve been a little quiet over the last few days — life has been rather busy behind the scenes. So yesterday, we decided a well-deserved day off was in order… although, as you’ll see, we didn’t stray very far from our love of all things vintage! 💚

Jones & Wells went to Burslem — following the story of Woods Ware.

What an absolutely magical day.
Our guided tour took us through the history of the Woods family, beginning all the way back in the 1600s and following three family lines through Burslem and its extraordinary pottery heritage.

Along the way we visited St John’s Church, where we were incredibly lucky to be allowed inside and see some rare Enoch Wood pieces, before continuing our journey to the site of the factory where that wonderfully familiar green tableware was once made… Woods Ware Beryl. 💚

But what made the day particularly special was hearing the stories from people with a genuine connection to the Woods name. There was even a little Woods shopping along the way — and perhaps one or two things may have found their way home with us! 😉

And then came the perfect ending.
We made our way to the beautiful Pavilion in Burslem Park for afternoon tea.

And, really, there could only have been one choice of china…

Afternoon tea served on Beryl. ☕💚

Sitting there drinking tea from those familiar green cups, after spending the day learning about the generations of people and pottery behind them, felt rather special.

For us, vintage has never simply been about old things.
It’s the people who made them, the places they came from, the lives they were part of and the stories they still have to tell.

And sometimes, taking a day away from Jones & Wells reminds us exactly why we started in the first place 💚
