Cadair Idris (meaning "Idris's Chair") is a dramatic mountain in Wales linked to the legend of a giant and a famous local myth that anyone who sleeps overnight on its peak will wake up either a poet or a madman.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?

Few places in Wales are better suited to a romantic sunset than Aberystwyth. As the sun slowly disappears into Cardigan Bay, the sky often turns shades of gold, orange and crimson, reflecting across the sea and promenade. It is a place where people of all ages gather to walk hand in hand, share quiet conversations and simply enjoy the beauty of the moment.

💡 OTHER INTERESTING FACTS:

Aberystwyth has been an important Welsh settlement for centuries. The town grew around a strategic castle built by King Edward I in the 13th century, but its story did not end there. During the Welsh uprising 1400-1415, the castle was captured by Owain Glyndŵr, Wales' last native Prince of Wales. For several years, Aberystwyth became an important centre of Welsh resistance and hope for independence.

Legend also surrounds the area. Beneath the waters of Cardigan Bay lies the mythical kingdom of Cantre'r Gwaelod, often described as the Welsh Atlantis. According to tradition, a fertile lowland kingdom was lost beneath the sea after protective defences failed, leaving only stories and folklore behind.

Modern Aberystwyth is often called the cultural capital of Mid Wales. It is home to the first university institution in Wales, the National Library of Wales and a thriving arts scene. Yet despite its importance, the town has never lost its connection to the sea, with its Victorian promenade, historic pier and spectacular coastal views continuing to attract visitors from across the world.
