Here's a lovely Quarter Log Cabin Cushion tutorial from the Fabric Yard Blog - a beautiful, satisfying make that I'd be more than happy to have sitting on my sofa!

But first - do you know where the Log Cabin pattern gets its name?

The design dates back to the 19th century and is thought to represent a pioneer log cabin. The central square - traditionally red - is said to symbolise the hearth or chimney at the heart of the home. The strips of fabric radiating outwards represent the logs of the cabin walls, built up layer by layer. It's one of those patterns that carries a whole story with it, which I think makes it even more lovely to make.

This particular version was put together by Judith from the Just-Jude blog, and she's done a fantastic job of coordinating her fabric scraps to create something that looks really considered and beautiful. It's a perfect way to use up those pieces of fabric you've been hoarding "just in case"!

https://fabric-yard.co.uk/blogs/news/log-cabin-cushion-tutorial

This is a slightly more involved project than some of the other tutorials on the blog, so it's brilliant if you're looking to stretch yourself or try something new. The step-by-step photos are very clear though, and Judith walks you through everything from piecing the front to creating a neat envelope back.

You may remember the vintage perfume bottle fabric I had in stock last year. It was colourful, beautifully detailed and it sold out within hours.

Well, I’ve just taken delivery of something similar... https://fabric-yard.co.uk/products/robert-kaufman-antique-perfume-bottle-fabric

This amazing 'Library of Rarities Antique Bottles' fabric by Robert Kaufman is covered with rows of ornate vintage perfume bottles, decorative glass flacons and curious little apothecary-style treasures. The colours are incredibly rich, with jewel-like shades of pink, green, blue, red and gold set against a deep magenta background.

It’s one of those fabrics you can look at for ages and still keep noticing new details. It's 100% cotton, 110cm wide and £8 per half metre.

I’ve included a few mock-up images to show how fabulous it could look made into a makeup bag, tote bag or cushion. These are purely for inspiration, just to give you a few ideas for what you might make with it...

This July's Fabric of the Month is Swallows Blue Songbird by Dashwood Studio - a mid-blue quilting cotton scattered with little birds and delicate orange, yellow and green florals.

https://fabric-yard.co.uk/products/swalllows-blue-songbird-dashwood

There's something about swallows that just says July to me (they are most commonly seen in the UK from May to August). They're the birds you spot looping about on long summer evenings, and this print has that same light, breezy feel - pretty without being fussy, and easy to work into pretty much anything: a summer dress, a stack of cushions, a tote bag for picnics, or simply a few quarters added to your stash for whenever the mood strikes.

It's 100% cotton, 110cm wide, £7 per half metre and there's currently only 7.5m left.

Meet the Perfect Day duo 🌹🕊️ - Libs Elliott for Andover Fabrics

I’m very pleased to introduce you to two brand new fabrics that arrived at Fabric Yard last week. Both are from the Perfect Day collection by the brilliant Libs Elliott for Andover Fabrics…

https://fabric-yard.co.uk/collections/new-arrivals

When I saw them, I knew instantly I was going to get them in stock. First we've got a vibrant, bold print on a crisp white background, packed with bright pink and red roses, delicate blossoms and graceful blue swallows. There are lilac leaves, little orange accents and scattered stars throughout, and the whole thing has a lovely tattoo-art feel to it. It’s full of personality and there’s just something about it that really catches the eye.

And how about a coordinating fabric from the same collection? A striking geometric print in purples, violets, lilac, blue, pink and navy, with crisp white highlights. The angular prism shapes create a sense of movement across the fabric, which makes it brilliant for modern quilts and contemporary projects.

Both are 100% quilting-weight cotton, 110cm wide, and £8.00 per half metre.
Perfect for patchwork and quilting of course, but also bags, cushions, accessories and anything that deserves a real statement print. Each on its own it's a gorgeous bold piece, but together it's a striking pairing.

Whether you go for one or both, I think you're going to love what you can make with these. They really are a beautiful combination.

Another great tutorial from the Fabric Yard blog...

It's an Apache Tote Bag, designed by the lovely Judith of Just Jude Designs, and it's a really satisfying make. The finished bag is approximately 17" x 14" (not including handles), fully lined and with a magnetic clasp — so it's sturdy and practical, not just pretty.

https://fabric-yard.co.uk/blogs/news/apache-tote-bag-tutorial

You'll need 0.5m of outer fabric, 0.5m of lining, some heavyweight sew-in Vilene, a pair of sew-on handles and a magnetic clasp. The step-by-step photos make it very easy to follow, and there’s a list of supplies that you’ll need too.

It would look great in one of our retro prints, but honestly, any fabric with a bit of personality will work brilliantly. A nice project for the weekend perhaps…

P.S. A lined tote with proper handles and clasp would make a really thoughtful handmade gift too!

Bonjour! 🥐

I'm pleased to introduce two brand new arrivals to Fabric Yard. If you have a soft spot for Paris, these might just be right up your rue!

They're both from the newly released Fleurs & Flutter collection by Camelot Fabrics, and they make a beautiful pair.

Paris Butterfly is the softer, more romantic of the two — a warm beige background scattered with roses, Eiffel Towers, teal butterflies and vintage travel stamps, with lovely handwritten Parisian script running throughout.

View here: https://fabric-yard.co.uk/products/fleurs-flutter-paris-butterfly-fabric-by-camelot

Paris Sightseeing in Teal is altogether bolder — a rich teal background packed with illustrated landmarks (the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, the Louvre), plus bicycles, coffee cups, macarons, wine and croissants. It's characterful and fun, and the colour is lovely.

View here: https://fabric-yard.co.uk/products/fleurs-and-flutter-sightseeing-teal-paris-fabric

Both are 100% cotton quilting weight, 112cm wide, and priced at £7.90 per half metre.

I think they work beautifully together, so if you're after a coordinated look for a quilt or a set of cushions, it’s a lovely choice.

June is here, and with it comes strawberries and sunshine (haha!). OK, so there’s not so much sunshine at the moment but either way, it felt only right that this month's fabric pick leans fully into a summer vibe.

If you’ve not seen it before, meet ‘Fruit Ombre White’ by August Wren for Dear Stella. With Wimbledon just around the corner, the timing couldn't be better.

The fruits run lengthways along the fabric in a beautiful rainbow ombre — blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, strawberries, oranges, lemons, kiwi, apple and pears, all the way across to the other selvedge and back again. It's wonderfully colourful, almost juicy, and the white base keeps everything feeling fresh and summery.

It's 100% cotton, 110cm wide, and priced at £8.00 per half metre. BUT there are only 4 units left so it won't be around for long!

P.S. If you make something with this one, I'd love to see it!

The Fabric Yard blog is a really great little archive of tutorials and inspiration, put together over a number of years, with input from some fantastic makers. I've been updating the posts, adding back lost images etc. and I wanted to start sharing them with you.

The first one is a really lovely drawstring art supplies bag for kids…(it could hold anything really). It's an easy make, great for both kids (with adult supervision) and adults alike.

https://fabric-yard.co.uk/blogs/news/kids-art-supplies-bag

This tutorial comes from Judith of Just Jude Designs — a lined drawstring backpack, roughly 14" x 15", perfect for packing away crayons, pencils and whatever else your little ones like to cart around. It's fully lined, uses eyelets and cord for the drawstring straps, and the step-by-step instructions and photos make it very easy to follow.

Whilst the original fabrics that were used to make the bag are no longer available, there are plenty of lovely materials that would be suitable in our Kids Fabric Collection. But really, anything could work for this bag…

Why not give it a go?

I'll be sharing more refreshed blog posts over the coming months, so keep an eye out.
