McCOY FLEET

We set up McCoy Surfboards corner in the museum recently, with some boards representing epic Ozzie surfers. The bottom surfboard was ridden by super grom Newcastle’s Nicky Wood who went on to establish a unique record in pro surfing. Nick won the RipCurl Pro at Bells Beach in 1987 at 16 years of age, making him the youngest ever surfer to win a world championship tour event. Next up is a board that belonged to future two time pro world champ, world and oz junior champ Damian Hardman, cool that this board still carries logos from an early sponsor Tony “Wicka” Hardwick’s surf shop. The plain white board (which has a green bottom) was Bondi ripper Cheyne Horan’s personal rider from 1975-77. Cheyne was still riding this board when he competed at the first Stubbies event at Burliegh Heads in 77. The top board came to us from the Quiksilver-Boardriders stash, it has been restored to within an inch of its life and is a beautiful board, but thus far we haven’t been able to sort its story. So there you go a little shrine to one of Australia’s great surfing names.
