There is never and I mean never a good time to take a break when you grow flowers for a living. Especially during a mini heatwave, but I went anyway slightly relieved knowing there was rain forecast (can you relate). I still handed over the watering to someone who I may have briefed slightly too thoroughly, and I tried very hard not to think about what needed planting.

But it was worth it, even if the life lesson is to learn how to change a tyre or at least know someone who can. And I obviously needn't have worried about the watering.

Back now to weddings to flower and flower subscriptions to deliver.

Do you know that lacy, cloud-like texture you see in flower bouquets? It's almost always an umbelifer. This plant family gives us some of the most beautiful, versatile flowers we can grow for cutting such as Ammi majus, Ammi visnaga, Baltic parsley, Bronze Fennel and Angelica are all firm favourites in my cutting garden.

But the same plant family also contains some of Britain's most deadly plants, and some of them look deceptively similar to the ones we grow and love. Hemlock water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) is the most toxic plant native to Britain. It's fast-acting, with no antidote and it grows in ditches and on riverbanks right across the UK. If you forage or cut from the wild, certain identification before you touch anything is always non-negotiable and I haven't even mentioned the dreaded hogweed.

These roses were perfect three days ago with their tight buds just about to put on a show. Then the heatwave came and they just let go. Blowsy and wide open overnight, the way roses do when they've had enough.
They're not wrong, exactly. Just not at the right stage for cutting for bouquets.

So I'm enjoying them until the petals fall and then the compost heap gets them next, and those stems will feed the soil that grows next year's flowers.
