An Unusual Summer Visitor Spotted In Ossett!
Thank you to our lovely customer Claire who sent this amazing video of a beautiful Hummingbird Hawk Moth enjoying visiting the newly planted Verbena in her Ossett garden over the last few days.
These amazing moths are summer visitors to the UK, migrating all the way from southern Europe. Have you spotted any where you are?

Verbena ‘bonariensis’ flowers from July through until October and thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. Drought tolerant and ideal for the very dry conditions at the moment, it also self-seeds easily.
Best of all, the bright and colourful lavender/purple flower clusters are highly attractive and loved by butterflies, bees and many other pollinators, including visiting Hummingbird Moths!

As the prolonged hot, dry weather continues, are your planted summer pots and containers beginning to look tired and past their best already?
Give them a refresh with some late flowering colour that will last through until the autumn (just take care to keep them all well watered during this very dry spell).

Carnivorous Captors 🪰🦟
Here’s a very different and exotic looking houseplant with a built-in talent to help control unwanted flies in your home naturally and without the use of chemicals.
Nepenthes ‘Monkey Jars’ is a tropical carnivorous pitcher plant that captures prey by attracting it to land on the nectar coated rims around its hanging cups, encouraging it to fall into the digesting liquid inside.
They are relatively easy to care for if you follow some basic care rules:
Hang in a bright light spot but not in direct sunlight, ensure soil is always kept moist, don’t allow to dry out and use a spray to spritz the leaves and pitchers regularly. Always use rainwater, distilled water or deionised water wherever possible.
