🐾🖤 Happy National Hug Your Cat Day from our feline CEO, Ary! 🖤🐾

Meet Ary… Chief Mischief Officer, household supervisor and full-time chaos coordinator.

Fun (and not-so-fun) fact: black cats often spend longer waiting for homes in rescue centres compared to many other cats 💔 Yet anyone lucky enough to love one knows they’re absolute magic.

Ary was found at just 2 days old, fighting for her life… and honestly? She’s been running our household ever since.

She’s kind, affectionate, follows us everywhere, attacks Katie’s hair with alarming commitment and firmly believes personal space is optional.

Her favourite snack? We’re ashamed to admit it… crisps. As a kitten she stole a packet and now somehow has the ability to detect opening foil from approximately 47 miles away. Forget cheese tax — this girl demands CRISP TAX 🥔👑

From tiny rescue kitten to feline CEO, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

🦜🌍 HAPPY WORLD PARROT DAY 🌍🦜

Today we’re celebrating parrots of ALL shapes, sizes, colours and chaos levels… from tiny chirpy Quakers to giant Macaws and everyone in between 💚

Fun fact… as a family, parrots have always been part of our story. Over the years we’ve shared our lives with multiple feathered family members ranging from Macaws to Quakers… and currently our newest rescue legend is Ken the Amazon, who joined us from 🐦

Ken is kind, hilarious, clever and has… shall we say… a VERY colourful vocabulary 🙈😂

And here’s a Pickles fact many people don’t know…

Most people assume the “Pickle” in Pickles Pet Pantry was a dog.

Wrong ❌🐶

Pickle was actually our beloved rescue Quaker parrot 💚 He passed away shortly before the shop opened, but his cheeky, mischievous spirit is still part of everything we do.

So today we celebrate the parrots that make us laugh, challenge us, outsmart us and occasionally teach the toddler questionable words 👀😂

Our resistant Parrot expert Dave will always chat feathered friends!

This blog feels a little different ❤️🌿

Truthfully? This has probably been my favourite blog I’ve ever written.

Gardening has become such a huge part of life for the Pickles family. It’s where muddy paws zoom, tortoises explore, dogs sunbathe, wildlife visits and somehow despite the chaos… we all slow down a little.

But as pet owners, gardening can feel hard. One website says safe, another says toxic, and before long you’re stood in the garden centre Googling every plant in your trolley 🙈

So I wanted to create something I wish existed years ago — a genuinely helpful guide to building a beautiful garden without compromising safety. From fragrant herbs and dreamy cottage garden flowers to toxic plants, emergency advice and options for dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and tortoises.

I really hope this blog brings you as much enjoyment, inspiration and help as creating it brought me 🌸🐾

☀️ HEAT STROKE CAN TURN SERIOUS FAST ☀️

Swipe through for the latest advice on what to do if you suspect heat stroke in your dog 🐶💦

🌡️ Call ahead to your vets
💧 Start cooling immediately with cool water
🌳 Move them into shade
🚗 Head to the vets ASAP
❌ Avoid wrapping in wet towels — keep water flowing instead

Prevention is always better than cure, especially in this heat 🫶

Take extra care with:
• Flat-faced breeds
• Older dogs
• Puppies
• Overweight dogs
• Thick coated breeds

Our courtyard is open for shady pit stops, paddling pool dips & doggy ice cream if you need somewhere to cool down 🍦💦

🌡🌡🌡 It's going to be HOT HOT HOT this weekend, so if you haven't already taken your dog for a walk by the early part of the morning over the next few days DON'T DO IT!!!!! 🌡🌡🌡

The temperature will be increasing rapidly through the mornings, rising to over 30 degrees by the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday, and this type of heat can cause fatal heatstroke. If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke phone your vet IMMEDIATELY - use the emergency line if your surgery has one - and they will give you the best advice on how to cool them rapidly.
🐾 Keep your dogs inside and close curtains to keep the hot air and sunlight out so that you can keep your house as cool as possible - use fans and cooling mats if you have them.
🐾 Encourage your cats to stay in as well if possible
🐾 Make sure any outdoor rabbits or guinea pigs have plenty of shade to escape from the sun - freeze plastic bottles of water to put in their hutches and change them regularly.
🐾 Always make sure there is plenty of fresh cold water available.

In this weather, not taking your dog for a walk won't kill them - taking them just might 😔😔😔
