Advanced Sea Kayaking Weekend

Just one space left on the last Advanced Sea Kayaking Weekend of 2026!

Run by Laura Bennitt, the course will focus on having fun in advanced conditions, giving paddlers the support they need to feel confident and empowered when the environment gets challenging.

Scheduled for spring tides so we're guaranteed conditions, the course will be matched to what the participants need and want, staying flexible to get the most out the environment on the day.

We'll think about how to use the conditions not fight them, how to get support from out body and our blade, and how to adapt our paddle strokes to the advanced environment. The course runs at a low 1:4 ratio to ensure maximum learning with high levels of safety support.

Laura is one of the most active advanced water coaches in Scotland, and a provider of the BCAB Advanced Sea Kayak Leader.

Introduction to Rough Water Sea Kayaking

Looking to head out in rougher water, or just to build your skills if conditions pick up? This 2 day course will look at ways to use the environment not fight it, how to feel confident when things get challenging, and the many ways in which we can play with the waves in a sea kayak.

Under the supportive guidance of expert coach Laura Bennitt, you might look at manoeuvering in wind and waves, dealing with tidal streams, or launching and landing through surf. With no set syllabus, the course is kept open and flexible to make the best of the conditions available, and meet the needs of each individual.

BCAB Open Crossings Module

Skerryvore, Bell Rock, Ireland, Orkney, St Kilda - distant points beckoning across the open sea. This one day, classroom-based course will give you all the information you need to strike out from the shore and paddle your own open crossings.

We’ll take a look at:
- navigation
- dealing with tidal flow
- fitness & mental challenge
- nutrition
- weather
- kit
- dealing with emergencies.

We’ll make time for you to plan some trips on the day, putting what you’ve learnt into practice and creating a framework for your next adventure.

The module is a pre-requisite for the BCAB Advanced Sea Kayak Leader, but can be taken by any paddler with an existing understanding of tidal planning in coastal waters.

The course can be combined with our Advanced Sea Kayak Leader training on 27th & 28th October.

Great conditions for this week's 3-day Firth of Lorn expedition, which came complete with dolphins, porpoises, otters and ice-creams. Setting off from Oban Bay on day 1 Janek took the group around Kerrera. Day 2 saw them head under Clachan Bridge to the southern end of Luing. A strong team meant on day 3 they could venture out into the tidal waters around Fladda lighthouse and enjoy a sunny surf back to Easdale.

Laura B had a great day coaching on the Falls of Lora today, setting tasks around controlling angle in flow to improve surfing, breaking out through the whirlpools, and increasing awareness of the effect of the water on our kayaks. Lots of hard work from her client, and visible progress during the session!
