We’re happy to have attended the HTA National Plant Show 2026 at NAEC Stoneleigh, showcasing the latest products from our sister company, The Christmas Cabin.

This year, we were especially excited to introduce our brand-new Galaxy Range — a collection designed by our team of experts to bring innovation, quality and standout seasonal style to the Christmas market.

At the heart of the range is our flagship new Christmas tree stand: the Stella Stand. Practical, premium and designed with retailers and customers in mind, Stella represents the next step in our growing product offering.

A huge thank you to everyone who visited us at the show, spoke with the team and took the time to explore what’s new from The Christmas Cabin, it was a fantastic couple of days and we'll glad to have had the chance to meet so many new faces.

Keep posted for this and more details about our new Stella Stand and Galaxy Range in the near future!

Post 3 of 3: Tools of the trade 🎄🐦

When it comes to protecting Christmas trees from bird damage, the tools themselves are simple — but used in the right way, they make a big difference.

One option is a basic T-shaped bird perch, fitted to the top of the stick placed on the tree. This gives birds a higher, safer point to land on, helping to keep them away from the delicate leader shoot at the top of the tree.

Another option is a spinner or reflective deterrent. These move in the wind and catch the light, helping to dissuade birds from landing on the tree altogether. For trees approaching harvest, this extra layer of protection can be especially valuable.

The application itself is a quick and straightforward process, but like many jobs in Christmas tree growing, the real value comes from doing it properly and consistently across the crop.

As our foreman Matt Allan-Stubbs puts it:

“It’s the simple job done consistently which helps to maintain quality.”

And that’s exactly what bird sticking is about. It may be a small task, but carried out at the right time, it helps protect the shape, quality and value of the tree right through to harvest.

Post 2 of 3: Protecting years of work before harvest 🎄🐦

A Christmas tree doesn’t grow overnight.

From planting a young tree in the field to shaping, feeding, maintaining and caring for it year after year, every tree represents a long-term investment of time, skill and attention. By the time a tree is ready to be harvested, it may have spent several years growing through changing seasons, weather conditions and regular cultivation work.

That’s why protecting the top of the tree is so important — especially in the final growing season before harvest.

The very top shoot, known as the leader, is what gives the tree its height and classic Christmas tree shape. If a bird lands on this fragile point and snaps it, the damage can affect the tree’s appearance at the very last stage, after years of work have already gone into producing a strong, healthy crop.

Bird sticks help prevent that from happening.

By giving birds an alternative place to perch, or by using reflective deterrents to keep them away from the leader altogether, growers can protect the tree’s shape and quality right up to the point of harvest.

It may seem like a small job, but at this stage of the tree’s life cycle, it’s an important one. Bird sticks help make sure years of careful cultivation don’t go to waste — and that each tree has the best chance of reaching its full potential before it becomes part of someone’s Christmas.

Part 1 of 3...

Why do we use bird sticks on Christmas Trees? 🤔

During the growing season, the very top shoot of a Christmas tree — known as the leader — is delicate but incredibly important. It’s what helps the tree grow straight, tall and into that classic Christmas tree shape.

Birds naturally like to perch on the highest point they can find, and without protection, they may land directly on the leader. One small bird landing in the wrong place can snap the shoot, damage new buds, stunt growth and affect the tree’s shape.

That’s where bird sticks come in.

Placed near the top of the tree, they give birds somewhere safer to perch instead of the fragile new growth. Some are also fitted with reflective tape or small windmill-style deterrents to help keep birds away altogether.

It may look like a small detail, but it plays a big part in growing straight, healthy, marketable Christmas trees. 🌲✨

For most people, Christmas trees are something you think about in December. For us, they’re part of everyday life—right through the year.

This spring is a particularly important time on the farm. This year, it's one of the two windows, the other being the autumn, that we plant the next generation of trees, knowing it will be years before they’re ready to take pride of place in someone’s home.

There’s a lot of care that goes into getting it right from the very start. Every tree is positioned using GPS technology, helping us make the best use of the land while giving each one the space it needs to grow strong and healthy.

It’s skilled, hands-on work—but it’s also about thinking long-term. The decisions made today shape the quality of the trees years down the line.

April is a critical window for Christmas tree health 🌲As new growth begins, trees are actively taking up nutrients — making it the perfect time to support them with mistblown foliar feeds. This method ensures fast, efficient nutrient absorption directly through the needles, helping to:

✔ Boost early-season growth
✔ Improve colour and needle retention
✔ Strengthen trees ahead of summer stress
✔ Maximise uniformity across the crop

Applying foliar feed now sets the foundation for premium-quality trees come harvest season. Don’t wait until deficiencies show — proactive nutrition is key.

What actually makes a “good” Christmas tree? 🤔

It’s something most people don’t think about when they’re choosing a tree in December — but in reality, a quality tree is the result of years of work.

Some of the key things we look for include:

• a strong, symmetrical shape
• good density and spacing of branches
• consistent colour
• healthy needle retention

None of this happens by accident.

Each tree is carefully managed and shaped over a number of years to develop that classic Christmas tree form people expect, as you can see on the before-and-after photos here. Adjustments made early on can make a big difference to how the tree looks at maturity.

By the time a tree is ready for harvest, it has typically had close to a decade of attention behind it.

It's a longer process than you might think, and it takes a lot of care to get just right.
