Who could resist this little girl?

She started life as an incredibly shiny lustreware eggcup, and has now been converted into an incredibly shiny lustreware pin cushion... With a flower-topped pin in her hair and a necklace made from a piece of ribbon and an old diamanté button (because a girl's got to look her best!)

And although it seems a little bit mean to stick pins in her head, it can't be any worse than popping an egg in there, smashing the top off and then dunking your toast soldiers in it. Surely?

(As ever, no glue was used and no eggcups were harmed in the making of this pin cushion)

I'm running a little experiment on Etsy - trying to work out if more listings means more sales.

And as a result I've got lots of pin cushions listed - more than I've ever had before. (And still more to come!)

Pictures show some of the ones I've added recently.

These two are listed for sale online now - cushions made from recycled fabric.

Perfect for saying "I love you, but I love the planet as well"

(Unlike most of the tat you'll find in the "Valentine" aisle of your local supermarket.... Too harsh??)

Selling cards online is quite hard I've always thought.

After all who's going to want to buy a single card when the delivery cost is almost as much as the card itself??

And as a result, the card section of my Etsy shop has always been a little bit haphazard - neglected even... I have sold the occasional card, but I've almost certainly spent more money the listings than I have taken in sales.

Not any more - there's been a major revamp!

I do still have some individual listings, but I've also set up two different sets of five cards, and two different sets of three cards (as pictured below). AND I've given you the option to put together your own choice of any five cards.

They're all blank inside for any occasion and good for kids and grown-ups alike.

Currently only available within the UK (because surely no-one is going to want to pay hefty overseas postage rates on cards - if I'm wrong about that, do let me know)

Do you know how to tell how old your hot water bottle is?

If you remove the cover and look closely inside or around the neck you should be able to find a daisy wheel symbol embossed in the rubber - like the one shown in my second image.

The number printed in the centre of that daisy wheel is the year the bottle was manufactured. Some bottles additionally contain dots in the twelve segments around the centre and you can use those to work out which month the bottle was manufactured in. Mine contains dots in the first four segments, so was likely manufactured in April of 2025.

The powers that be recommend that you replace your hot water bottle after two years of use. However it's worth noting that bottles can take up to a year from manufacture to make their way onto shop floors (I doubt you'd be able to find a 2026 bottle in the shops just yet!)

And that's not to say that all bottles over two years old are dangerous or that all bottles under two years old are completely safe. Following the safety guidelines (things like using hot but not boiling water, and storing your bottle empty) is the best way to prolong its useful life

And if your bottle does date from 2022 or earlier, give it a good once-over for signs of wear or damage before using it

(If you can't find a daisy wheel, then you may have a really old bottle, or one that doesn't meet UK standards. Check to see if it mentions BS 1970:2012 anywhere - that's the relevant UK standard and should definitely be stamped on the bottle. If you can't find any mention of that either, you probably need to get a new bottle)

This year's plan...

* A limited number of in-person selling events (focussing on Arts Trails and similar). I'll let you know if and when I have anything booked in. (There's a list of applications to complete on my desk right now!)

* Some workshops. I already have a couple lined up for April with some quilting groups. If you know of any other groups who might like me to run a workshop for them, please let me know. I also need to pull my finger out, book a venue and run some ticketed public workshops. Watch this space!

* Online sales - these were at an all-time low last year, so I've clearly got my work cut out, but keeping on top of my Etsy shop and letting people know what's in it (hopefully in a non-pushy way) seems like a good start

I remembered to take some pictures of my stall this morning

I'm back in the greenhouse at Woodthorpe Park for day 2 of the Christmas Craft Fair.

We're here until 4pm this afternoon. Come along and say hello!

21/11/2025

Just leaving this here before I go and pack up my bags for this weekend's market - which will be the Christmas Craft Fair

It's in the greenhouses at Woodthorpe Park (which is also beautiful for a little walk if you have time) from 10 til 4, tomorrow and Sunday.

Possibly my favourite event of the year, it's jam-packed with fabulous local makers, and - very handily - just at the end of my road!

Keep your fingers-crossed for the weather.

See you there!
