The Chronicles of Tralia: Book Three,
The Ambassador’s Death by Anita K.Mills
A Ride North
Suddenly, the wind blew hard and Kathryn felt the power within her respond to an unseen threat. 'A magical storm is coming. The sorcerer is close. Ride hard and fast,' she called in their heads as their breaths were stolen as they breathed out and they could hear no sound above the noise of the wind.
Leaves swirled up in front of them as the trees bowed with the force. It whipped water up from river and sprayed them as they galloped by. The reeds in the river waved about and it ripped out of the water and Kerwyn almost lost his seat as one hit him in the face. He held on tighter as they raced through the valley of Hakorn, the name taken for the farmers that settled nearby many thousands of years ago.
The rain came moments later, blinding both rider and horse. Lightning struck the ground, making horses neigh in terror, but all the riders were experienced and held the reins tight, guiding the animals through the storm. They raced on and soon entered the forest. The lightning struck again and again, striking trees, the ground, the water and the rocks. Fires started all around, but the rain quickly squashed them out. Keeping close to the river, more by instinct than knowledge, in case they were hit and hoping the water would keep them alive. They all noticed the strange fog that swirled around the river's edge, coming closer to them. No one knew whether the fog contained men, but they suspected. Had someone followed them?
The man by the gate in Ral Printer?
Kathryn, suspected that they had and now leading, saw the path divide just a little way ahead and surged forward. From there they would come to the road that led from the forest and from there to the Manor, the home of her friends, but could they make it.!?
