Last year I visited Haarlem to learn more about Hannie Schaft, Truus Oversteegen and Freddie Oversteegen, as well as walk in their footsteps across various locations. We specialise in femme models, but the resistance project has introduced some men that it feels rude to miss out.

While we can't make everyone (the caveat I say a lot!) I can do my best! We've always been about covering what other people tend not to, and various men have popped up in the stories that you know what - come on in! So the next project isn't "Women of the Dutch Resistance", it's "Heroes of the Dutch Resistance". I don't often talk too much about who is coming up but I am currently finalising the sculptor brief for Jan Bonekamp and wanted to tell you about him.

Jan, also known as "Little Jan" was part of the same resistance group as Hannie Schaft. From early in the occupation, Jan worked against the fascists by distributing flyers, posters, fundraising and eventually calling on colleagues to join the February strike of 1941. In a similar route as many, including his best friend Hannie, Jan's actions escalated to more direct and dangerous actions such as the railway sabotage and infamous "liquidations".

It was one of these liquidations that cost him his life, while working with Hannie. She was devastated after his death, and among other praise words called him "the nicest guy I've ever met". And because I am a sap, I'm making a 28mm Little Jan to hang out with his mates.

I'm heading soon to Arnhem and the surrounding areas for WW2 research, I have a chonky list of places to visit over the few days, but does anyone have personal recommendations? I'm sure I'll be back when I inevitably don't fit everything in. Major and Mrs Holt have been very useful!

Today I visited Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen. 25,843 Jewish and Roma folk passed through here on their way to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Buchenwald, and Ravensbrück. Less than 5% made it back.

The "Give Them a Face" project aims to find and display every single one, and they've got over 20,000 now. The massive collection spans three floors in the memorial opposite the former barracks.

Kazerne Dossin is visitable to the public with a purpose built museum, and you can go inside the original building where people were kept until there were enough for a train to take them into even worse places. I didn't take any photos in there, it was very haunting.

While everybody knows the story, its important to keep retelling as people forget so quickly, especially how quickly it can happen. The horrors of WW2 aren't in a vacuum.

The last two pics I found super interesting as they show where the known clusters of resistance (and types) were, and another of where Jews were sheltered by both institutions and private residences.

Obviously not a fun trip, but very interesting and sobering, and important. I'm researching, so have some leads on stories to learn more about and then tell you about.

Thanks for reading!
Annie

This WONDERFUL new book from .r.pan and is incredible. Featuring Hannie Schaft, Truus Oversteegen and Freddie Oversteegen. More ways for people to find out what these women accomplished are always excellent. Its currently only in Dutch but even worth it for the art work if you can't read it - the art is so expressive.

I'm travelling between Belgium and the Netherlands for the next week to find out more information about women (and some men, like Jan Bonekamp who is in this book) of the resistance for the next round of miniatures, and so I can learn and then pass this information onto you.

I picked up a whole new bunch of books in Dutch where there isn't an English version, so there's so much more information to be gathered!

Out of office til the 22nd! Currently I'm in Medieval Belgium aka Antwerp, and the stress is melting away! I'm keeping posting to please the algorithm gods, meaning you're subjected to my holiday snaps - but they're gonna be pretty cool and interesting!

It's D Day weekend and I've never been to Normandy, but it will definitely be a future trip. I do have some WW2 research places on the agenda though...

TIME FLIES! At 5pm today it's all over. What a ride it has been. And it's not too late to hop on - if you want something to help make your miniatures photography way more betterer!

Also IMPORTANT NOTE: There's no pledge manager! This means if you wanted to add anything else, you need to do it pre 5pm as everything gets locked in afterwards. It's to make everything as smooth as possible. See below for more!

I'm a believer in the idea that you live as long as you're remembered, and in John Blanche's case he's gonna stick with us quite a while longer.

Obviously my favourite Blanche painting is this one of myself and a cyber peeg, that I'll forever be honoured to own. He painted it during lockdown. His pen and ink style always kept me calm in a world of increasingly overworked styles.

Two of my favourite anecdotes are the time he was telling me about there being enormous guinea pigs in the garden and perhaps whatever he had consumed had caused these wild hallucinations, to discover a few days later that some capybaras were on the loose, and that's how he found out about capybaras.

The other was when he had his leg amputated - I asked if they let him keep the leg and he merely replied "You wish."

Rest in peace John!
