The Phoenix is coming together, The structure is there, but the personality isn’t quite settled yet.

Each piece takes time to build, I keep refining with small adjustments along the way.

I’ve chosen to add touches of ashen grey to its feathers, as traces of its fiery ordeal. Each feather is hand cut from 100% wool felt and carefully placed. It’s a stage I’ve learned not to rush, placing and replacing until it feels right.

I’ll show the finished piece in a few days.

Last week I talked a little about how one pattern often leads into another, how my Hen began with the shape of a Panda, and how the Hen then evolved into a Turkey.

That Turkey unexpectedly became the starting point for my newest piece.

Here’s an early glimpse of the Phoenix.

Originally I thought I might make a Peacock, but as I kept thinking about the shape and mood I wanted, it slowly shifted into something else.

I started imagining the Phoenix not in the dramatic moment of rising from the ashes, but afterwards having landed, resting quietly, cooling off after its ordeal.

A bit like a butterfly that has just emerged and is sitting in the warmth, waiting for its wings to dry before flying again.

At the moment this is still just the basic structure and beginning stages, but that slow process is often where the personality starts to emerge.

This bright but gentle, dog soft sculpture is slowly shaped, stitch by stitch. Made by hand using 100% wool felt, this piece is designed as more than decor.

With a touch of retro nostalgia I aim to create characters that don't just occupy space, but add to the atmosphere of a home.

You can see all of my characterful creatures in my Folksy shop.

I always find it interesting where ideas come from, and often it’s not where I expect.

A lot of my design process happens quietly in my head. I’ll look at real animals, but also find myself thinking about things I’ve seen before - toys, illustrations, little fragments from childhood that have stayed somewhere in the background.

I don’t tend to sketch things out. I usually go straight to a paper pattern and start shaping something to see where it leads.

It’s a joy when I find that I don’t have to start from scratch. I was working on a panda, and realised that if I turned the shape upside down, it was exactly what I needed as a starting point for a hen.

That hen led to a turkey… and the turkey has sparked my next idea.

I’ll share more about that soon.

These subtle birds are nearly ready for their forever homes.
I’d love to know, where would a creature like this live in your house? Tucked on a bookshelf or perhaps a nursery shelf?
They'll be available soon — I’ll share details here when they're ready.

The subtle birds are coming on nicely.

I often get asked how long my pieces take to make, to be honest I tend to get lost in concentration and lose track or forget to time the process all together.

However, I have actually timed myself making a bird. From the cutting out to the finishing trim and finesse, it's approximately 3 hours!

I share more of these moments in The Stitch List - a corner of the internet for first access to new pieces and a glimpse behind the scenes in my studio. You can sign up here:

I've got a subtle plan taking shape.

A flock of complimenting birds in subtle, muted colours are on their way. It's a slow process but the joy is in the details, when a personality begins to peek through.

Are you a "slow crafter" too or do you like to get your projects finished in a flash?
