Thank you Sherwood!

Sherwood Art Week had a slightly soggy but soon warmed up with The Secret Garden Craft Fair. Thank you so much to everyone who came along to say hello, stopped for a chat or bought from me. There was a lot of love for my wiggly worms and I hope those who wanted one got a colour they loved from the vending machine!

This glorious Phoenix is now quietly resting in my Folksy shop. It has been meticulously sculpted from 100% sustainable wool felt. Every stitch is an act of intention, built from the inside out to ensure a soulful personality peeks through.

Here’s a look at the process behind my resting phoenix sculpture.

I wanted to create a phoenix that felt softer and quieter than the usual fiery interpretation, not dramatically rising from flames, but resting afterwards, recovering gently after everything it has passed through.

Once I had built the shape, all my attention turned to the feathers. They were built up one by one, layer by layer from wool felt, with touches of ashen grey added throughout to suggest traces left behind by the fire.

This piece took shape slowly over time, with lots of careful stitching, refining, and reshaping along the way.

The finished Phoenix.

I wanted to create a Phoenix that felt a little different from the usual dramatic image of rebirth and flames.

Instead of rising, this one is resting afterwards, perched quietly, cooling off after its ordeal, with touches of ashen grey left behind in its feathers.

I hand-sculpted its demure posture with lots of careful shaping and stitched its wool felt feathers, layer by layer.

Making all sides beautiful.

I’ve been working slowly on the Phoenix’s wing over the last few days, building it up feature by feature and paying close attention to the details underneath as well as on top.

I always want my pieces to feel carefully considered from every angle, even the parts that might not immediately be seen.

It takes extra time but really helps gather character and where the sculpture starts to develop its own presence.

I’ll share the finished piece soon.
