🎣 Trotting a Float – The Fundamentals

Trotting is all about presentation. Letting your float travel naturally with the flow is one of the most satisfying and effective ways to catch chub, dace, roach and grayling on rivers.

🧰 Essential trotting gear:
• Trotting or match rod (12–14ft for control)
• Centrepin or fixed spool reel
• Mainline to suit flow and fish size
• Stick floats or Avon floats
• Shotting pattern spread evenly down the line
• Hooks matched to bait size
• Landing net and disgorger

🍬 Proven trotting baits:
• Maggots – fed little and often
• Bread flake or punch
• Casters for wary fish
• H**p and tares where allowed
• Sweetcorn for bigger chub

💡 Key trotting fundamentals:
• Set the depth so the bait just ticks bottom
• Mend the line to keep the float leading the bait
• Feed upstream of the float to draw fish down
• Let the float run naturally – no dragging
• Strike firmly but smoothly as the float dips

Flow, control and rhythm. When it all clicks, trotting is river fishing at its finest 🎯🌊🎣
