Adopting plant cuttings from the Barbican conservatory in London whilst it closes for renovation is turning out to be an amazing community event. When it reopens again in 2030 some of the original plants will be grown outside. Another stark reminder that our planet is heating up!

Five hundred people turn up to adopt plants from conservatory that will reopen in 2030 after renovation project

If you're not using it already, LIQUID SEAWEED is a great biostimulant to help plants under stress, such as in periods of drought - just add to your watering can and dilute as directed. We sell several different brands, including organic, Soil Association-approved Maxicrop. (For acid-loving plants such as Camellias and Rhododendrons, make sure you choose Liquid Seaweed with Sequestered Iron.)

We also stock Westland SEAWEED MEAL - a powdered form of seaweed, which not only feeds your plants and soil - many of our customers have found that it makes a great, non-toxic cat-repellant too!

Additionally, in our range of straight and organic fertilisers weighed up loose on the premises, we have CALCIFIED SEAWEED - a natural organic fertiliser and soil conditioner which can be used instead of garden lime to reduce soil acidity. It also breaks down heavy, compacted soil, improving structure and drainage. AND it encourages beneficial soil microbes! 😃

How is your allotment or veg patch coping with the heatwave(s)? Some customers have said what a challenge it has been to get anything to grow this summer. If you're finding it a struggle, then it could be time to try NO DIG.

By adding a layer of compost mulch on top of undisturbed soil every year, you can achieve great results for less time and effort!

One of the many benefits of NO DIG gardening is improved soil structure - excess water can drain away freely, but in drier weather moisture can be retained. No Dig expert and author, Charles Dowding, notes with his Dig/No Dig comparison beds, the No Dig beds absorb water like a sponge, whilst water often just runs off the surface of the dug bed.

The pictures below show a selection of No Dig veg on a Norwich allotment holding up well in the heat. All these beds have been topped with a layer of the excellent, peat-free and locally-made PlantGrow compost or mulch. All were watered/photographed on Wednesday evening, and the watering before that was Sunday evening. Direct-sown carrot seedlings, young leek transplants, dwarf French beans recently germinated in bottle cloches, as well as established courgettes, tomatoes and climbing beans etc. Only during prolonged periods of the hottest weather will they be watered every 2 days instead of every 3 days.

If you're not getting the crops you want - definitely give NO DIG a go! The book "No Dig" by Charles Dowding is full of lots of useful information, or look up his YouTube videos, or sign up to his fortnightly emails which are packed with a wealth of helpful tips to grow your own healthy veg!
