10th of August is St Bessus Day - this may well be the popular ancient Egyptian god Bes in disguise.
Bessus protects soldiers against the perils of battle, guards children and is also invoked to aid fertility and one of his symbols is the ostrich feather - all of these are attributes of Bes.
Bes is a fun god, he likes to make people laugh, especially children. He is a fierce fighter and fiercely protective of the home too.
Bes was also one of the few Egyptian gods who was always portrayed full face, not in profile.

9th of August 1914 Tove Jansson was born.
She was an artist, illustrator, cartoonist and author, probably best known for her series of magical 'childrens' stories about the Moomintroll family.
These stories also involvers strange and very individual characters such as Thingummy and Bob, Little My, the sister of Moomintroll was the Snork Maiden and they were often visited by the travelling philosopher Snufkin.
There were also the sinister Hattifatteners, tall, thin and ghost-like creatures.

Today is known as Double Luck Day.
8 is a very lucky number to the Chinese as this digit looks very similar to the Chinese symbol which means 'to make a fortune' and includes the ideas of prosperity, good luck and success. So the more 8's that occur together, the greater the good luck.
So the 8th of the 8th is doubly lucky day, and therefore a day to start something important to you, or to visit somewhere or someone who might be of help to you in your business or career.

7th of August is St Cajetan's Day although not a saint well known in the UK, in Central and South America he is a very important saint.
In Argentina, St Cajetan is said to be the saint of 'bread and work' as he helps worshippers to find employment and if you are out of work, helps you to find food for your family.
He is also the patron saint of both gamblers and those trying to give up gambling and is said to provide miracles in times of trouble.
He is best prayed to over nine consecutive nights (a novena) and give offerings of bread and wildflowers.

6th of August is the festival of Thoth, known also as Tehuti or Djehuti.
Thoth is a very important deity known for his wisdom, magical powers and as the mediator between the warring gods, Horus and Set. Thoth's main aim in this conflict was to make sure that neither side won. If one of them was injured then Thoth would cure them.
Thoth is god of the calendar, time-keeping and the keeper of records, sometimes called the Scribe of the Gods.
In Western occultism and alchemy he is known as Hermes Trismegistus, Hermes the thrice wise.

5th of August is the Feast of Salus the Roman god of health and wealth.
Salus is depicted feeding a snake, or holding sheaves of wheat, and is associated with baths and healing springs. His name means 'Safety'.
To gain his blessing give offerings of grains of wheat or flour and salt.
Salus is found in special greetings which include a wish for good health such as Salvation, Salutation, Salubrious and even Salute.

4th of August is the ancient Egyptian feast of the Dead.
This festival starts at sunset as Ra descends into the Underworld.
This a time to get rid of hurts, bad feelings or grudges that you have been holding onto for a long time.
Whisper your sorrows and regrets to a black stone or pebble, then give the pebble back to the Earth by hurling it away from you.
Or dig a small hole in the Earth and whisper your woes into it, then fill the hole in and let the Earth take those worries and bad feelings and disperse them so they no longer cause you pain.

3rd of August is the feast of Artemis and the Dryads.
Artemis is the Greek Maiden Goddess of the Moon and hunting, known to the Romans as Diana.
Dryads were originally specifically spirits of oak trees, although these days the term is often used to indicate any spirits of the woodlands.
Artemis is also known as Goddess of the Grove, which also tells us that originally her worship was out of doors in the forest, and probably in groves of oak trees.

2nd of August is the first Sunday in the month so today is the feast of Crom Dubh, the Black Bowed One.
Crom is a very ancient god of death and re-birth. At this time of year he is literally The Reaper, the worker in the fields cutting down the bright corn, the Harvester. He is black and bowed because of his great age and the many years he has spent reaping, his skin tanned to black by long hours working beneath the burning Sun.
His black skin also recalls the human sacrifices who were killed in a ritual manner in the bogs and are still occaisionally found as bog bodies.
Crom Dubh guards the souls of the dead, keeping them safe in the mounds and the Underworld. He also guards the haystacks and the heaps of bright grain.

1st of August Rabbits! to one and all and Happy Lughnassadh!
The Lughnassadh festival continues today. As this festival celebrates the gathering in of the grain, as the grain is cut down, the spirit of the harvest is confined to smaller and smaller areas until the last stand of grain is cut. This is where the spirit of the harvest is to be found, so it was from this last sheaf of grain that a corn dolly would be made. The Corn Dolly both represents the spirit of the grain, and holds the spirit of the grain, who will be kept safe in the home until she is needed to return to the fields when the next crop of grain is sown.
Of course it is not just bread we make from grain, ale and whisky both start off with the grain too. And the process of beer making is embodied in old folk songs such as John Barleycorn, where the spirit of the corn is converted into home brewed ale.
