A super Installer of the Month entry, this time from DPL PEST Control in Darenth, Dartford 🐦🏠

The pigeons had taken a liking to the side of this house, perching high above the alleyway and leaving their droppings on the path and bins below.

Bird droppings are not only unsightly and unhygienic, but can also create a slippery surface underfoot, particularly when wet.

DPL Pest Control installed Defender Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spikes along the apex of the roof, preventing pigeons from landing above the narrow path between the two houses.

They also made sure the pigeons could not simply move across to another nearby perch. Spikes were carefully fitted to every possible landing point, including:

🐦 The alarm boxes
🐦 The satellite dishes
🐦 The aerials
🐦 The pipework
🐦 The smaller ledges around the property

This attention to detail is so important. If even one comfortable perch is left unprotected, pigeons may simply move a short distance and continue causing the same problem.

Another brilliant August Installer of the Month entry, this time from Pest Solutions South West LTD ☀️🐦

Based in Wincanton, Somerset, Pest Solutions South West was called in to stop pigeons gaining access beneath this solar panel array.

They installed Defender Jaws® around the edges of the panels, creating a secure barrier that prevents pigeons from returning underneath to shelter and nest.

Made from strong, UV stabilised black polycarbonate, Defender Jaws® blends neatly with the solar panel frames to create a discreet and barely visible finish from ground level. Each piece locks directly onto compatible 30 mm and 35 mm panel frames, with no drilling into the panels.

Keeping pigeons out from beneath solar panels can help to:

☀️ Prevent nesting beneath the array
🪶 Reduce the build up of nesting material and feathers
💩 Keep the panels, roof and surrounding areas cleaner
🏠 Prevent blocked gutters caused by displaced debris

A quick before and after for this August Installer of the Month entry from PSEM, featuring Defender Thistle® fitted along the top of a garden gate.

This time, the troublesome visitors were not only our usual pigeons, but pheasants too! 🐦

If you live near a pheasant farm, you will know that these beautiful birds have a habit of turning up everywhere. They may be lovely to look at, but they can also create quite a mess when they regularly make their way into residential gardens.

The best solution was to discourage them from entering in the first place, so Defender Thistle® was installed along the top of the gate to prevent it from being used as a convenient landing point and route into the garden.

At only 62 mm high, Thistle® provides a discreet, low profile solution, but with an incredible 80 pins on every strip, it creates a surface that birds simply do not want to land on. The problem was solved immediately, leaving the garden to its residents 🌿

❓ Why are Defender Bird Spikes a humane form of bird control?

Defender Bird Spikes protect buildings by changing the habitual area where birds choose to land, without trapping or harming them.

Although spikes can look intimidating, they are designed to create both a physical and visual barrier. Physically they prevent birds from gaining a comfortable footing on a ledge as they are installed slightly overhanging the outside edge. Birds have great vision, so as a visual deterrent the birds can see the pins as they approach and simply choose a more suitable place to perch.

The RSPCA (England & Wales) supports the use of correctly installed bird spikes, stating:
“Non-lethal spikes...when installed safely, are one of the most humane ways to deter pigeons.”

The RSPCA also explains that spikes discourage pigeons from landing but will not hurt or impale them.

When the correct spikes are chosen for the species, surface and level of bird pressure, they provide a simple, humane and effective way to encourage birds to move on. Our Defender range, includes different widths, heights and designs, allowing each problem area to be protected appropriately.

“And here we see the pesky pigeon attempting to gain access to the solar panels…” 🎙️🐦

Kurt from DirtDetox has brought a little David Attenborough style commentary to his August Installer of the Month entry, and we love it!

As Kurt shows off his installation, one determined pigeon repeatedly returns to investigate. Unfortunately for the pigeon, it is met by a securely fitted barrier of Defender Jaws® Solar Panel Bird Excluders and quickly flies away again. It even returns with reinforcements, but the result is exactly the same!

This reel may raise a smile, but it also perfectly demonstrates what Jaws® are designed to do. Each piece locks securely onto compatible 30 mm or 35 mm solar panel frames, creating a neat barrier that stops pigeons from getting into the sheltered nesting space beneath.

Beautifully fitted, brilliantly demonstrated and complete with some “ultimate craftsmanship”. Away with the pesky pigeons indeed! 👏

Our clear spike bases and plastic spikes are manufactured from UV stabilised polycarbonate, helping them retain their strength when exposed to sunlight and changing weather conditions. Smallwood Pest Solutions has a lovely entry to Augusts Installer of the Month. Feral pigeons and other birds were consistently perching on the patio heaters above a restaurant’s outdoor seating area. This was resulting in droppings landing on the tables below, creating an unpleasant and unhygienic problem for customers and staff.

Installing spikes directly onto the heaters was not an option, as the heat could have caused the spikes to melt. Instead, a bespoke aluminium frame was fabricated above the heaters, creating a safe and secure surface for installing Defender Thistle® Spikes.

At only 62 mm high and with an incredible 80 pins per strip, Defender Thistle® provides dense, low profile protection that helps prevent birds from finding a comfortable place to land.

This is a brilliant example of assessing the individual challenge and creating a clever solution rather than simply treating it as a standard installation.

A local entry for August’s Installer of the Month comes from Paul at Green Valley Pest Control here in Devon, where gulls are a particularly common problem.

For this property, Paul used Defender Gull Spikes with our Defender Universal Gutter Clips to prevent gulls from perching along the gutters.

The photographs show exactly how the system works. Each clip attaches securely to the outside edge of the gutter and holds the spike centrally above it, while leaving plenty of space beneath for rainwater to continue flowing freely.

The long 304 grade stainless steel pins fan out across the width of the gutter, preventing gulls from finding a comfortable place to land. This also helps keep the gutters in good working order by reducing the build up of guano and other bird related debris.

Our Universal Gutter Clips can also be used with Defender Wide Plastic Spikes and Defender Wide Stainless Steel Spikes, making them a handy option for protecting gutters from different bird species.

Of course, the other photographs were far too cute not to include! Paul’s dog, Copper, is delighted with his new Jaws® soft toy 🐶 Every order of Defender Jaws® receives one, although we cannot guarantee it will not be claimed by another member of the family!
