New Paper Aeroplanes album coming soon on Diverse!

We’re thrilled to welcome Paper Aeroplanes to the Diverse roster. We’ve been fans of the band for a long while now, we’ve sold their last two albums and two EPs on CD in our shop and they’ve played in it for Record Store Day. This is the first chance we’ve had to be able to license an album of theirs for vinyl and it’s the band’s debut on the format. Finally, we get to release something by a Welsh artist!!

For those of you not aware of the band, there’s a full history HERE. There’s something for everyone with this release, fans of Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling will love Sarah’s voice and their music veers from gentle acoustic folk to Florence & The Machine-esque pop music. It’s something a little different from us but with links to the folk and country artists we’re known for releasing. It’ll be out on 180g single LP with a download code at the beginning of April.

We love Paper Aeroplanes and hope you do too.

Vagabond Delays.

OK, OK, I know, this was supposed to be out ages ago. I’ll tell you a little story. We planned this as a double album as some of you may have noticed. We thought it might be just a little bit too long for a single LP. We got the test pressings back and they weren’t up to scratch, there was a fair bit of sibilance and we didn’t want to inflict this upon you. After much debating amongst ourselves and more talented people that are wise in the ways of mastering vinyl, wit was decided that it would be better to have a slightly quieter album that sounded loads better. This meant that we could fit it on one disc so this is what we’ve done. The new test pressings sound 100% better. Annoyingly, by the time they got to us it was in the run up to Record Store Day and Pallas were fully booked (and continue to be in the weeks following the day). We’ve been told that the LPs will leave Germany on 27th April so finally, the lovely sounding, 180g single LP in a gatefold sleeve with a CD of the album will be officially release in the first week of May.

Sorry about the delay and all.

Eddi Reader : Vagabond

The new Eddi Reader album, Vagabond is released by Reveal Records on February 3rd 2014. Recorded by Mark Freegard in Eddi’s hometown of Glasgow with a cast of well chosen musicians and friends eager to play their part in this, most captivating, deeply personal yet universal sounding album. Vagabond was produced by Eddi Reader and features many of her long-term musical collaborators including: John Douglas (Trashcan Sinatras), Alan Kelly, Ian Carr, Ewen Vernal, Roy Dodds (Fairground Attraction), John McCusker and Boo Hewerdine.

“Eddi Reader is one of my favourite singers of all time.” – Jools Holland

In Eddi’s own words –
“I have been on a journey with this set of recordings. Two years ago, I began writing and playing with ideas on John’s new piano. Well, I say “new” – it’s a second-hand, small Zender piano. I’d never heard of that make, but when we got it tuned, the fella said that they use this kind of piano to train the piano tuning students. Often, if they got bad marks, the saying goes that they had to ‘return to Zender’. After I kicked him out of my house for that terrible joke, I sat down and began falling for its sweet tone and I attempted to learn my way around it. The guys in the Edinburgh music shop who sold it to me told me that Tom Waits had been in the shop earlier and sat playing on it for a half hour then bought another one. Mr Waits was playing Edinburgh that night, so it seemed plausible. It’s a lovely piano nonetheless. It took me all the winter of that year to become acquainted with the idea that I was writing and that I should start recording. I did, but only the odd day here and there. 2012 was a wonderful and weird one. John and I got married on 8 June. With that we are both blissful, but in other things we were challenged. John developed an incurable illness and we were distracted by health issues and family troubles. I took a while to steady my feet about all of that. Then by the end of the year, I knew I needed to pull the fellas together and try recording live – if only to bring myself back to land. The good news is John is walking the road to recovery and will get better. No fear or doubt! Buíochas le Dia! The recording sessions progressed throughout January 2013, (it’s the best time to grab everyone as most are at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival) and they were amazing. We all squeezed into Mark Freegard’s Kyoti studio with Roy Dodds (drums) and Ewen Vernal (double bass) creating an engine for Boo Hewerdine’s steady rhythms (guitar) to steer through the songs with me (singing) sometimes playing guitar or piano, Ian Carr (guitar) soloing and Alan Kelly (accordion) floating in and out of everything. I recorded around 26 songs and had to choose 12 as 26 won’t fit on a CD. This new album was supposed to be 12 songs that flowed well together but I couldn’t bear to leave some off. So I got John to choose. When I protested he would say, “Those songs are on the next record”. We compromised on 14.”

“The energy she uses in a single performance could probably power a wee village on the outskirts of her native Glasgow” – The Scotsman

Lau Play At Womex.

The fabulous Lau are playing at the world renowned WOMEX. It’s not quite a festival, more a massive showcase for traditional music from around the world. You can wade through the WEBSITE to find out more. This year it’s in Cardiff which is pretty handy as we can meet the lads for a beer. If any of you are about, they play in the Wales Millennium Centre on Friday, they’re on pretty late at 11.15pm to midnight. To give you an idea of the mix of artists, they’re on after Les Tambours de Brazza (Republic of the Congo/France) and before Winston McAnuff & Fixi (Jamaica/France). The full schedule is HERE.

If you’re thinking of going, book in advance, this is the first year that they’ve involved the public so much, it’s usually all delegates. It’s worth doing a bit of research first!!

Giant Steps is 199th Best Album EVER in NME

NME have announced their 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time in this week’s issue. The Boo Radley’s Giant Steps is ranked at 199. Here’s what they say:

“A band who’s career was killed by an unrepresentatively chipper hit single, it’s easy to forget this post-shoe groundbreaker that boasted the brilliant ‘Lazarus’.”

I can’t help but think they missed the word ‘gaze’ in that but hey, it’s what they wrote. It looks like our love of the album is being shared by others this week!

Now available on 180g double LP with a gatefold sleeve. Order your copy HERE, HERE, HERE!

20th Anniversary Giant Steps article on The Quietus.

Charlie Frame has written a rather wonderful account of his love for Giant Steps on The Quietus website. We didn’t even bribe him (although I did send him a copy of the LP after I’d read the article, he deserved it). Here’s a snippet:

The Boo Radleys’ Giant Steps was this writer’s ‘eureka’ moment, and I dare say if it hadn’t been for that fateful October evening in the mid 90s I probably wouldn’t be sitting here writing about music today. Sliding the secondhand cassette from its purple and white art-deco sleeve, lying back in bed and hitting play, nothing could have prepared me for what was to come – the complete rearrangement of an impressionable teenage mind over the course of 64 minutes. Everything since has felt like thrill-seeking – a mad hunt to get back that feeling of pure catharsis. But every subsequent album that’s since impressed itself upon these ears – the Beach Boys’ Smile, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Super Ape, Ornette Coleman’s The Shape Of Jazz To Come, MBV’s Loveless, Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works 85-92, to name a few – always seems to link back to Giant Steps for me somehow.

Read it in all its glory HERE. You can own your very own copy on 180g vinyl if you click HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link.

If You Leave by Eleanor McEvoy OUT NOW!!

Yep, our 7th release of 2013 (sadly down on 2012, we had a party to arrange and merch to design for the 25th anniversary of our record shop, we’ve been busy!) is in stock. It’s Eleanor’s fifth LP on Diverse and has a sprinkling of lovely guests.

McEvoy is joined by guest vocalists Mary Coughlan, Gemma Hayes and Hermione Hennessy with Sharon Shannon on the accordion for the song ‘Secret of Living’. The song was written especially by McEvoy for a run of nine sell-out shows at The Olympia in Dublin to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the album ‘A Woman’s Heart’, the third biggest-selling album in Irish chart history which helped to establish McEvoy as a star in her home country.
