If you have just one corm to plant this weekend to enjoy flowers in a few weeks time ... it has to be the Saffron Crocus (Crocus sativus) 😉

🌱 Plant Saffron crocus corms in late summer or early autumn (August through September). This timing gives the corms enough weeks to settle and grow roots before they bloom into purple flowers in October and November.

Did you know? Over time, each original corm also multiplies into a cluster of new cormlets, so you'll enjoy even more flowers in the coming years!

🌱 Is your lawn looking a little worse for wear?

After a long, dry summer, your lawn may be looking brown, patchy and parched — but don’t worry! With some welcome rain and cooler temperatures, now is a good time to give it a little TLC.

Here are a few simple jobs to get your lawn back on track:

🌾 Clear away the thatch
Give the lawn a gentle rake to remove dead grass, thatch and debris. This helps water and air reach the soil more easily.

🌾 Let the soil breathe
Dry weather can leave soil hard and compacted. Use a garden fork or hollow-tine aerator to make small holes and improve drainage and airflow around the roots.

🌾 Fill in bare patches
Got thin or bare areas? Sprinkle over some grass seed and gently rake it into the surface of the soil. Keep the area moist while the seed gets established.

🌾 Give it a gentle feed
A light application of an organic or controlled-release granular fertiliser can help support recovery. Avoid strong, high-nitrogen or iron-heavy liquid feeds while the grass is still stressed.

Spring has just moved a little closer! 🌷🌱

A lovely range of popular flowering bulbs has arrived this week, ready to get your autumn planting underway. There’s still more to come, although the intense dry summer has unfortunately delayed the lifting of some bulbs. We’ll keep you updated as they arrive.

For now, there’s plenty to choose from, including traditional Crocus, Narcissi, Tulips, Alliums and Hyacinths, available in handy pre-packs. 🌼

Rubber, Swiss Cheese (pictured) and Yucca re-potting time. If you favourite indoor plant is falling over, leaning or simply bursting out of its pot then it might be time to consider a re-pot.

🌱 When to repot: The best time to repot is during spring or summer when the plant is actively growing. Signs it needs a new home include roots appearing through drainage holes, water running straight through the pot, or growth slowing despite good care.

🪴 Choose the right pot: Select a pot that is only one size larger than the current one – around 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) wider in diameter. A pot that's too large can stay wet for too long and increase the risk of root rot.

🌿 Use a free-draining compost
A good-quality houseplant compost works well such as Westlands. For extra drainage, mix in a little perlite, or horticultural grit.

✋ How to re-pot
🌱 Water the plant a few hours beforehand.
🌱 Gently remove it from its current pot.
🌱 Loosen any tightly circling roots.
🌱 Add fresh compost to the base of the new pot.
🌱 Position the plant at the same depth it was growing before.
* Fill around the root ball with compost and firm lightly.
* Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.

☀️ Aftercare: Place your Rubber Plant back in bright, indirect light and avoid overwatering while it settles into its new pot. It may take a few weeks to adjust before putting on fresh growth.

🌱 Top tip: If your plant is already as large as you'd like, simply remove the top few centimetres of old compost each spring and replace it with fresh compost instead of moving it into a larger pot.

Time for Biennials – Plant Now for a Spectacular Spring 😉

Thinking ahead to next spring? Now is the perfect time to start planting biennials – those wonderful garden favourites that are sown and grown this summer, then reward you with a dazzling display of colour and fragrance next year.

Our Wallflower seedlings are already looking strong and healthy, and we're delighted to say that Sweet William pack plugs have now arrived too. These cottage garden classics are ideal for adding vibrant colour, pollinator appeal and beautiful cut flowers to your spring borders.

There's something particularly satisfying about planting biennials. A little effort now means you'll be greeted by a garden bursting into life just when you need it most after winter.

🌱 Top Tip: When planting Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus), allow 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) between plants. If planting in rows, leave around 30 cm (12 inches) between each row. Giving plants plenty of space improves air circulation, encourages healthy growth and helps create a stronger, more floriferous display next spring.

🌱 Green Roof Plant Suggestions 🌱

Sedums and Sempervivums are the superstars of green roofs! Tough, drought-tolerant, and wonderfully low-maintenance, they thrive in shallow, well-drained troughs or purpose-made roof containers.

For best results, plant them in a gritty compost mix - something like John Innes No. 3 blended with around 25% potting grit. This helps provide the excellent drainage these evergreen hardy plants love.

🌱 A quick word of caution: Before creating your green roof, be sure to check the overall weight. Wet soil, plants, and containers can become surprisingly heavy, so it's important to ensure your roof timbers are strong enough to support the load safely.

🪨 Did you know? In their natural habitat, Lithops have evolved to look almost exactly like small stones and pebbles. This clever camouflage helps them avoid hungry herbivores, making them one of nature’s most impressive masters of disguise.

☀️ Top growing tip: If you're keeping Lithops indoors, give them plenty of bright, indirect light. A sunny spot near a south-facing window is ideal, allowing them to soak up lots of natural light throughout the day while staying happy and healthy.

🥕🥔🍠🫜 Just a quick update for keen veggie growers🌱

As we (hopefully!) move into a spell of slightly cooler and perhaps damper weather, now is a great time to keep up with successional sowings and maintain a steady supply of fresh produce.

Continuity sowing:
• Lettuce
• Radish
• Spring onions
• Round carrots
• Microgreens

There’s also still time to plant Christmas potatoes, although tuber stocks are becoming limited.

And looking ahead, onion and garlic bulbs should be available in the next couple of weeks, ready for autumn planting.
