Sadly not the average Eclipse photo but the skies were dramatic all the same and the atmosphere strangely eerie as the sun was obscured by the moon. .

In Capability Brown’s day, observing this natural phenomena in the Georgian times would have been viewed in different ways. Newtons theories were filtering through about the heavens but as the light faded, the birds stopped singing and the temperature dropped this, for many would have still been perceived as either an omen, a warning or testament to Gods creation and the moving of the heavens.

A natural phenomenon all the same and really brings home how we are connected to a much bigger universe.

For our new followers, a young Capability Brown would have grown up here helping in the fields and learning the rhythm of the land. The changing seasons; the effects of the weather on the land; movement of water; undulating natural fields and the statement parkland scapes all inspired a young Brown. Alongside this, with a close connection to agriculture and the knowledge he gained from the Lorraine family tending their gardens, all combined to produce one of the greatest landscape architects in later life.

The estate around Kirkharle Courtyard remains a land of agriculture. A working landscape. You will still experience that here. The rhythm of the land and the seasons working together to bring food to our tables.

The first week of the summer holidays is done… now it’s time to slow down, explore and discover something new.

Here at Kirkharle Courtyard, our studio doors are open every day. Wander through the Courtyard and meet talented makers at work – watch paintings come to life, stained glass catch the light, pots take shape on the wheel, lampshades handcrafted, jewellery designed, furniture lovingly created, and beautiful crochet pieces stitched with care.

Every studio has a story, every maker is happy to share their passion, and every visit is a little different.

Why not spend a few hours with us? Enjoy a lakeside walk, browse the independent shops, stop for brunch or afternoon tea at The Running Fox, and take home something truly unique.

Grab your trainers and head over to the Kirkharle Courtyard parkrun 9am start. We're still running the summer route just to make sure all the toadlets have safely found their way away from our normal route. It's an uphill start over rigg & furrow; down green lanes and old roads. But what is guaranteed is wonderful picturesque countryside and a delicious breakfast from The Running Fox or take-away from Brown's Lakeside Larder ❤️
