🏁 Mazda MX5 2.0 160bhp Graphite Edition 🏁

βœ…οΈ Custom Stage 1

A naturally aspirated engine - low peak power gains. Yet the customer was delighted..... why?

When we were contacted by Roger (a distinguished older gentleman) about his MX5, I immediately went into "reality check" mode. Im always dead honest with customers and I made it clear any potential improvement would be subtle, and wouldn't be anywhere near on par with a turbocharged vehicle. I'd estimated a peak power gain of around 10bhp and perhaps 15nm of torque, but did state we could probably get this sort of improvement through the majority of midrange and top-end.

However, Roger insisted we give it a go. The main complaint was the vehicle was easy to stakl below 2000rpm on clutch release, and the engine starts to run out of power after 4200rpm. Roger had fitted an expensive Pedal Commander box to counteract this, but this was unsuccessful. I disconnected the Pedal Box before starting.

I immediately noticed in the stock software that at low RPM and low load, the AFR was very lean. And after 4000rpm the ignition timing advance was rather conservative.

Normally, when tuning a vehicle we tend not to alter many low-load cells, however this was absolutely necessary on this. I slightly reduced the Lambda request at low load below 2000rpm which slightly richens up the fuel mixture - hopefully smoothing this area out nicely.

Then to deal with the upper midrange to top end. Tuning a Naturally Aspirated engine can be painful, as really small changes often give the subtle improvements needed. So a very minor decrease in Lambda coupled with a few extra degrees of ignition timing and the verdict was in.

I called Roger a few hours later, and told him to "give that a try". he came back from the test drive and stated above 4000rpm now felt much more alive, and the engine stalling issue below 2000rpm was drastically improved. Result. Job done βœ”οΈ.

It's often the surprising jobs like this which give me the most satisfaction, knowing how much Roger will enjoy driving this car a lot more.

And its this exact reason why I'm the best in the West. Proper custom calibration and good old fashioned field-based development. It took a few hours but was worth it.

βœ…οΈ Custom Stage 1+ TCU Software

This lovely 2019 BMW 120d with just over 30,000 miles on the clock was simply begging for a tune. It's owner, Rob was a class guy and after speaking at length on the phone I explained a variety of vehicle specific technicalities and explained why we should also tune the gearbox (its a ZF8hp of course).

1st job - pop the ECU off and check to confirm it's stock. And it was βœ”οΈ.

Datalog the vehicle - boost, rail pressure and fuel quantity perfectly tracking requested Vs actual parameters, again confirming it's super healthy.

Flashed in my own custom TCU tune to the gearbox first - sharper shifting, increase torque converter line pressure and a torque management strategy matched to my Stage 1 engine software.

Loaded in a "tried and tested" calibration and headed for another datalogging session. Absolutely perfect once again with room for improvement.

A few tweaks to injection timing in the midrange and fuel rail pressure puts this vehicle exactly where a healthy stage 1 should. Overall gains of 30+bhp and 45nm+ torque may not seem like much, however these gains carry through a huge portion of the RPM range and massively improve driveability.

After the customer undertook a test drive he reported sharper throttle response, a noticeable power improvement and was also impressed with how different the gearbox felt.

Gearboxes should always be tuned alongside engines, both are integral to the way a vehicle drives and they should both work together seamlessly πŸ‘Œ

We are Pembrokeshires only custom tuning specialist.... whilst many claim to be "specialists" none undertake the in-house development and software writing, coupled with on-road datalogging that we do.

πŸ”Ž Investigate Calibration

Yesterday was manic, from 08:30am to 6pm I managed to get through 5 vehicles (2 were custom tunes). However this BMW was brought to me after having an insane amount of money spent on it. A garage had replaced the EGR valve, turbocharger and a whole range of other random parts costing close to Β£2000.

The issue? On hard acceleration the car would enter reduced power, but other than an occasional code relating to intake airflow quantity - no other fault codes were present.

The vehicle owner was getting to the stage where cost of repairing the vehicle was almost higher than the cost of purchasing the vehicle.

However on the phone call I stated I was fairly confident I know whats happened.

In just minutes I could see from Diagnostic data that the DPF pressure sensor reading was static and with 250,000 miles of DPF life remaining it was clear this car had received a DPF delete via software but the DPF was actually still fitted (tail pipes clean as a whistle).

"Benched" the ECU and was able to 100% confirm DPF data blocks had been manipulated.

Performed a software update on the ECU and flashed back to stock calibration.

Now the customer can get the DPF issue resolved and finally enjoy the vehicle. Unfortunately this is extremely common and in this instance its lucky to have not experienced catastrophic component failure due to the high exhaust back pressure.

We work with a variety of Motor Traders but unfortunately this one didn't think to investigate the software (despite simple Diagnostic tests being able to narrow things down).

Message to all Motor Traders - put your pride aside and if in doubt just give me a call.

βœ…οΈ Speed Limiter Removal

No prizes for guessing which large utility company this used to belong to..... originally with an annoying low speed limiter activated, it wasn't possible to get to safe motorway speeds.

But now with our Custom Stage 1 and Vmax removal this vehicle has an improved power delivery and top speed capability.

We've developed a wide range of software solutions for the majority of software versions and have tried and tested base calibrations for these.

βœ…οΈ Custom Stage 1

One of the most popular 2.0 diesel engines I tune on a very regular basis.
These generally delivery exacwhats expected of them - testament to German build quality of course.

Its owner (Ash) is a great guy and has recently moved from hos previous Ford, into this Golf and he couldn't be happier (for good reason).

I've spent a very long time working in a variety of different software calibration types for these engines and have built a great Winols5 database for pretty much all 2.0 variants. The key with on a manual gearbox is a smooth, linear power delivery woth good boost control and super clean Lambda to minimise DPF soot loading.

And thats exactly what's been done. Final logs indicate 184-190bhp and a clean 420nm of torque. A nice "safe" stage 1 adds excellent driveability and a very welcome power gain.

Thanks Ash πŸ‘Œ

We are Pembrokeshires only custom tuning specialist (despite what others claim) and we write and develop all software in-house. We don't use slave or generic files. We utilise realtime datalogging techniques and make software adjustments based on this.

πŸš—βš‘ Rachel Reeves has confirmed a new pay-per-mile tax for electric vehicles and hybrids β€” with drivers set to be charged based on how far they travel each year πŸ’·

From April 2028, EV owners will reportedly pay 3p per mile, while plug-in hybrid drivers will be charged 1.5p per mile as the Government looks to recover lost fuel duty revenue. β›½

For the average driver covering around 8,000 miles a year, that could mean an extra £240 in annual costs 😳 Drivers with long commutes, rural journeys or work-related travel could end up paying far more.

Ministers say the move will create a fairer system because petrol and diesel motorists already pay fuel duty every time they fill up. But motoring experts fear the new charges could discourage people from switching to electric cars ahead of the 2030 petrol and diesel ban. πŸ“‰

The tax would be added alongside vehicle duty payments and marks another growing cost for EV owners after road tax changes introduced last year. 🚘

πŸ‘ΉπŸ‘Ή the Devil's number isn't 666 πŸ‘ΉπŸ‘Ή

Its 9979 πŸ‘Ή.... this software variant is an update designed to deal with the DieselGate scandal and an issue we've covered many times previously.

This software variant can have a drastic reduction in driveability and power output for a variety of reasons. On the 1.6 diesel engine such as this CAYC engine they were also fitted with an "air straightener" which formed part of the dieselgate conversion, a quick "hot fix" way for the VWAG group to get away with bodging their way through the emissions scandal.

The black tube like device seen in the photograph above is designed to slow down the flow of air as it crosses the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor. Whilst it improves the potential accuracy of the sensor, it hampers power particular in the top end of the RPM scale due to the air flow restriction.

As part of the service we offer, for absolutely no additional cost when done alongside our custom tune we will undertake a "rollback" to pre dieselgate software and remove the air straightener device. 🫑

Trying to tune and work with dieselgate software is in my opinion pointless - rolling back the SW variant effectively gives us additional power for free by restoring the power loss felt due to the initial dieselgate update. πŸ€—

Please note - removal of the air straightener without software adjustment will cause MAF faults and usually limp mode. ⛔️

Pembrokeshire only tuning specialist, we write and develop software in-house for a variety of vehicles with a predominant specialism in German vehicles. πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ
