Heads Up!

It's World Curlew Day!

The day on which we mark the laying of the first Curlew eggs ( quite a few birds couldn't wait!)

Here's a throwback , a duo of my birds posing on the shore in Morecambe Bay.

Please head on over to to check out the activities to celebrate this amazing but endangered bird.

If you can, please make a donation to support the wonderful work that curlewaction.org does. Every little helps!

Take care

Share My Joy....and Apologies!

Where do I begin? Firstly I must explain my absence ...it can be summed up perfectly by the 3rd picture 😱 All consuming....a complete terrorist and I LOVE him!

The first update is that I've been elected as an Associate Member by the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts !!!! I'm already overwhelmed by imposter syndrome πŸ™ˆ but SO grateful πŸ™

The second update relates to a recent conference, organised by , at Lancaster University. The European Fieldworker Workshop was awesome! I learned SO much and met some brilliant birdy people.
I was also delighted to share the Curlew work I did with Primary Schools a couple of years ago.

Finally.....I'm just dipping my toe into lapwings...Fred eats EVERYTHING, so having bits of wire pinging around our shared space is always scary 😨

Hope you're all OK and keeping warm and dry!
Take care

A Mixed Bag....

Delighted to visit the RSMA Preview this week. The exhibition is fab, as usual and well worth a visit.
My guide was my wonderful cousin Christine ( aka Dame Nelly....as she is an actual Dame.. I know I've mentionedit before... 😱🀩 so proud of her!) and we also met up with friends we haven't seen in over 30 years!!! It was so exciting and we were nattering so much that we only managed a couple of photos... here we are standing in front of my exhibit.
Chuffed? Oh yes! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

The second photo shows a Curlew commission, which flew down to the lovely Rev Sue, who lives in the village where the Vicar of Dibley was filmed! A birthday gift for her husband πŸ₯³

The last photo is simply because it makes me smile when I see it. Here's Freddie, 5 months old and a Parsons JRT. He brings me absolute JOY and exhaustion on a daily basis!

Hope you're all OK!
Take care and keep dry

Share My Curlew Joy?

I'm actually speechless....those who know me will appreciate what a rare event this is!!

My Curlew will be flying in to the Annual Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London this September!!!!!

WHOOP!!!!πŸ₯³

I was thrilled at the responses she generated on Instagram and FB ( thank you!) but dared not hope she'd get in.

As you are aware, I'm an Ambassador for . Sale of this piece, would generate a donation to their ( tireless) efforts to protect the iconic bird.

More details of the Exhibition to follow, but in the meantime, massive thanks to the RSMA for selecting my work and to Mall Galleries for their patience ( I ask inane questions πŸ™ˆπŸ˜)

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Take care

It Started with the Perch....

Yet again, the perch! The shape reminded me of the a Curlew ....beak, stance, who knows.

I had no choice!

I must confess to a bit of an obsession with the bird - in case you hadn't noticed!

Forgive me if I've told you before ( you probably know anyway ) but the collective noun for Curlews is a herd or salon or skein. How beautiful....a skein..

I just wish there was a Curlew emoji 😁

Sale of any of my Curlews generates a donation to , working hard to protect this iconic but endangered bird.

Hope you're all OK!

Happy Sunday
Take care

A Little Help from My Friends....

It was the perch...I mean..... honestly......did it not deserve a winged creature?!

Here's my Curlew, strutting, probably just landed.....I'm quite pleased with this girl tbh.

Which reminds me.... " Wire Smith", is so much more than my birds. I have amazing support from fellow environmentalists, who are far too modest to have their pictures posted here, so....

A HUGE thanks goes to;

Janie the Wood......who helps level my perches , helps make them presentable and is the most amazing and knowledgeable support and friend. We also share a love of tools 😁πŸ’ͺ
Her nickname is Isambard..... as she's clearly a born engineer.

Mike ...... resident researcher.....he must have been born in the Bodleian ( the Greater Manchester one....) Mike is an art guru, he has a good "eye".

Stephen......aka Inspector Gadget. Need a tool? Stephen will probably have 2....you have a choice, loads of support and the most amazing garage / workshop space ( my whole house would fit into one half of it!) I've ever seen.

Last but not least Brendan still my best pal and a great photographer.

Couldn't do it without them, I just play with the wire 😁

Thanks Team!!!

If I sell this Curlew, or any of them tbh, a donation flies straight to the wonderful .

Hope you are all OK and have as much support as I do.

Happy Saturday!

A Quick Fly-By

Morning All,

Hope you are all OK?
Lots going on here...adjusting to my workshop/bedroom combo, trying different wiring techniques and.....the simple matter of becoming a "puppy mum" to a ten week old Parsons JRT.
Freddie (aka -Demon!) I'm exhausted!!

On a more serious note...

Here's my latest Puffin.
I'm attempting to highlight the perils of plastics to sea birds. The plastics around the base of the perch were collected from the beach outside.

I was horrified to read about Puffins ( and other seabirds) using plastics in their nesting materials, such a threat to the pufflings.

Post mortems carried out on Puffins confirm that the birds are ingesting plastics too.

Yet another threat to this red listed bird.

I know that manufacturers are becoming more aware, of the dangers to the environment of single use plastics, but we really must try harder!

Rant over...

Hope you are having a restful weekend.

Take care

Heads Up!

It's World Curlew Day!

The day on which we mark the laying of the first Curlew eggs ( quite a few birds couldn't wait!)

Lots going on:

celebrating in Stroud with . Check out the amazing street mural painted in celebration

has built a huge Curlew
(Cathy 😁), which has walked through Nidderdale, raising awareness of the plight of this wonderful bird. Read all about this amazing journey!

Please support where you can!

Happy Monday!

Doris - Here Today......

Morning All

Big changes this end, but it's simply my next stage!

I had to let Doris go....such a tough call, but necessary.

The first blessing is that she has gone to a wonderful new owner

Charlotte is a fantastic interior designer whose environmental values resonate with my own.

I know that Doris will be settled there.

I really can't complain.... I've enjoyed Doris for almost 4 years, and I still live in " Bird Central" on Morecambe Bay!

I'm working from home now, still with an unbelievable view. How lucky am I! Quite literally living beak to beak with my flock...so if anyone catches me " Curlooooo-ing" (or digging down into the sand for a small crab), you'll understand why 🀣

Hope you're all OK πŸ€—
Happy Easter!

Is There Anybody There.....πŸ™ˆ

Morning All!

Sorry for the radio silence. I've been adjusting to the next phase in life, best described as "getting there"!

I've also been experimenting...
playing with wire of course. Not quite ready to share, but I will eventually.

Just a reminder that 21st of April is World Curlew Day ( we need a Curlew emoji 😁)

I'm posting a heads up for some birds I'm selling, and obviously, any sales will generate a donation to .

The birds are currently perching at The Folly in Settle ( where they're part of the "Cry of the Curlew" Exhibition),
and the Fiona Dane ( formerly Mick Oxley) Gallery in Craster Northumberland.
Finally, there are a couple in flight, to the Old Courthouse Gallery in Ambleside. Due to land mid week!!

Anyway, I hope you are all OK... the lighter nights and sunshine are so welcome aren't they?

Happy Sunday!
