What should I show my model as? - Jaguel Hilton
Jaguel Hilton is part of the Breyer 2026 range and is the first regular run release on the Criollo Stallion/Bandalero mould. He is a portrait of the real Jaguel Hilton who is a Criollo stallion.
So what should you show him as? Here are my breed suggestions!
🦚 Criollo 🦚
So let's start with the obvious. The mould is sculpted to be a Criollo, the model is a portrait of a Criollo and frankly I think you should probably stop reading at this point (although please continue for some less obvious suggestions). I do think this is the best choice for him. He's not 100% perfect in every way but this is a really obvious choice and suits the model perfectly fine.
🦚 Polo Pony 🦚
I'm not sure whether it is just that he's small (he is quite a small mould) or that he has a hogged mane but I do like the idea of a Polo Pony for him. It's not perfect (I'd like to see the tail tied up) but it is another option if you wanted to go for something a bit different. Lots of Polo Ponies have heavy South American blood and always worth remembering that many are not actually ponies (although don't ever call them horses)! There are some very nice OF Polo Ponies out there though, especially with the new Breyer release, so try this at your own risk!
🦚 Campeiro 🦚
This is a small gaited Brazilian breed and not one you see around that often. It's quite similar to the Criollo with heavy Spanish blood. It is gaited but this mould is doing a dramatic pose rather than a particular gait so you can get away with that. It might be an interesting one to try.
🦚 Partbreds? 🦚
I could definitely see a few partbred mixes that might work for this guy, a cross with a Criollo or Campeiro and a pony type breed might suit him well. This might be a good option if you are planning on getting a model on this mould customised and need a partbred because of your colour choice.
A final note - those brands - do they matter?
I remember a very very long thread on Yahoo groups about this (am I really that old, yes I am). To some extent it depends on the judge. For me if the model is OF and has a brand I'm not too bothered if it is being shown as a different breed, especially if the breed really suits the model. I'm aware that sometimes Breyer pick some *odd* choices for portrait models and I'm not going to mark down an owner because of this. That said, I know (why do I remember this argument so well) that other judges do not take the same stance. Which raises an interesting question, if you regularly judge OF do you take into account a model's brands if they have them? Would you mark this horse down if he was shown as something other than a Criollo because the brands don't match? Interested to hear your thoughts!
