Orca Fishing Charter Minehead

So, after 17 years being part of Minehead’s fishing fleet, Orca left the harbour for the last time today. Really sad I wasn’t there to wave her goodbye but she is off to her new home in Southern Ireland. Will miss her but I know she will be loved and looked after as where she is off too, the family who are taking her on with bring her back to what she should be.

Thank you to all who have supported Dad and his boats over the years. A chapter that has been brought to close far too early, but I was proud to have been part of it for the last 42 years (started going to sea at the age of 6).

It is with great sadness that I announce the unexpected passing of the skipper of Ocra, Albert aka Burt, on the 17th December 2023.

Albert was at home on the sea and took every opportunity to go fishing over the nearly 50 years as a charter Skipper. Having served as the last rescue swimmer in the RNLI at Minehead in the late 70’s as well as running a local Butchers, his real passion was sea fishing which he shared with so many people over the years.

He was a loving Husband to Heather, father to Clare and myself (Ross), Step father to Lee, Grandad to Annaliese, Corey and Bodhi and will be missed by so many.

May you rest in peace and may fair winds blow. Sleep easy Dad and you where always the best

Father / son day out today as the party couldn’t make it. Good day, lots of dog fish but also had. 4 bull Huss, 1 strap conger, 1 starry hound and 4 baby Tope. Fancy fishing? We had a great day out there n the Orca today. Just a father and Son trip to give the boat a run. Some really nice fish and both caught plenty to make the day go fast.

Just a short trip again today to give the boat a run. 1 x spotted Ray, 1 x Thornback Ray, 1 x Blonde Ray, 2 Hounds, 10 small Congers and 1 Dog fish. Not bad for 3 hours. All fish returned to fight another day.

So, the challenge was set between Father and Son. Just a 4 hour, over the tide trip. After leaving the harbour at 07:30 it was so smooth but with an 11+ meter tide, it was ripping through. It was a quite start but then Ross’s uptider started to run. That was a nice 4lb 14oz Bass. Then as the tide started to slow, Ross had a small Conger closely followed by a nice Bull Huss by Dad. He then had a small conger before loosing a really nice fish which just took off. Ross then had another small conger. Right on the turn of the tide, Ross’s down tide rod just bend over. This fish just took line and we thought this was a good Tope. It took some getting in but was pleased to see a 45lb to 50lb conger. It was brought on board for a photos before being returned to fight another day. The tide picked up quick so we cut the trip short as the leads didn’t hold bottom. Think it was the Sons day today.

So Orca was out on the water with Tim and the crew yesterday. The hounds where about again along with some rays, Gurnard and the good old dog fish.

Well had a little 3 hour over the tide trip. Dad took the session with a couple of Dog fish, small Tope and a nice stary hound. Ross had just a couple of dog fish. It was a bit lumpy but it gave the boat a run.

So if it’s fishing from the boat or from shore, you just never know what your gunna catch. Ross and his mate Sebastien Belgeonne fished a new spot for them, just East of Minehead. On a big spring tide they had some great fun. Seb had 2 nice schooly bass and 1 strap conger and Ross had a strap conger, and very small dogfish and a nice thornback ray. Lots of w**d to contend with on the ebb tide but great fun. We have already picked our next “new” beach fishing spot, but we also need to get the Orca out with some new parties, so if you fancy booking the boat for either an over the tide or low water trip, please call Albert for prices and availability on 01643 703687.
