SHINING IN THE DARK - a few weeks ago these hellebores were choked with ivy and hidden away under a conifer and with a little nurture and some more light they are now glowing by the light of our solar powered outside light. I think this might a be metaphor for how I’ve been feeling. I’ve been wintering, but there’s glimmers of what Spring will bring. Because hope can grow, even when it’s dark.

LOOK FOR THE CATKINS - we call grey days like this walrus days in our house, you know the days, heavy impenetrable grey days that seem endless between January and February. But if that just makes you feel more miserable, here’s my tip for surviving the gloom. “Look for the catkins” those little chartreuse green tassels are dangling from the trees, and they are saying the brighter days are coming. If you keep your eyes peeled you might just spot some suitably colourful Blue Tit’s and that’s a happy colour combo right there, if ever there was.

POSTAL STRIFE - hello lovely humans, I hope you are all keeping well on this last day of January! I have spent most of the day pricing different postal services and I’m in a bit of a quandary. I have been meaning to review my postal costs for some time, to check that I was being fair to both parties, but in the lead up to Christmas another question kept cropping up - TRACKING . I have to admit, that I usually like to play the postal lottery and opt for non tracked and usually win. But when things don’t turn up, I generally take it in my stride and kindly enquire with seller. but from the point of view of a business, I take it really personally when your purchases don’t arrive. I am finding that more and more with my international buyers that the expect tracking as standard. Is think something you would prefer. Ideally I would have a one size fits all solution, becasue I don’t want the admin of lots of offerings. But any customer insights would be gratefully received. Should I just switch to tracked shipping? This would still be with the Royal Mail, because they are still currently the greenest mailing solution. Thoughts don’t necessarily have to be on the back of a postcard, comments are welcome!

RETREAT - it’s day three of my holiday, and it’s super lovely to just sit, chat and paint. I’m learning to be less pressured in the outcome of the painting, because it just doesn’t matter - nothing needs to be a masterpiece in your own sketchbook, it can just be. Trying to remember that these are just snatches of ideas, little memories. They can be reworked later or maybe not.

BEING MORE NED - I’ve seen a lot of posts about artists needing time to sit still, and have to confess to not being very good at that! But Christmas as a small business owner and a house move have hit me, and my body is going at a snails pace. Today I was meant to plan for the whole of Q1 and then roughly plot out the year. But instead my morning stroll with Ned turned into a good few hours of exploring our new neighbour and this afternoon I’ve binge watched The Crown, am I annoyed - no! It’ll all come good, the thoughts are in my head and I’m sure they’ll work their way out. For now I’m going to lean into being more Ned. Enjoying each and every walk and cosying up on the sofa, the boxes and the planner can wait a little longer. For all that are interested, the studio will slowly start to awaken for new orders both wholesale and online from the 23rd. With web orders being dispatched from the 25th. I am off to Spain next week with a pal to see my Ma and Terry. And will be enjoying a bit more down time.

2024 - Hello and Happy New Year! There’s been a bit of standard January radio silence this end, despite our broadband and phone line finally being connected. We are in one corner of the Devon triangle were there is no 4G connection unless you spend a while in the bathroom. So it’s been nice to slowly dip our toe into the worldwide web again, this weeks searches have included; best Rayburn lighting practices and the opening times for the tip. Today the sun has shone and we have enjoyed some time outside, unearthing drainage and clearing guttering. It’s been heaven, and yes I appreciate that might be a bit weird! I do love the first weekend in January for this. A chance to declutter and breathe after the decadence of Christmas. #2024

TWIXMAS - we’ve been leaning into slowing down, catching up with some nearest and dearest and some sleep. Learning to enjoy moments in our home, sharing simple joys and plenty of candlelight. It hides many a questionable decorating choice. The next few days hold time for us to slow even further, just the two of us and Ned, exploring some lanes and woodland and learning more about our new home. Hope you can slip serenely into the New Year too, and take time to let out a large exhale. Big loves to you all.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS - wishing you all a day of merriment, joy and laughter, with moments of calm and peace. May your toes be blessed with warm socks and let there be chocolate coins for breakfast. Thank you to you all for being with me for another year, for your continued support and purchases - I really do appreciate you!

LAST ORDERS FOR USA AND EUROPE - I’m a little late shouting about this, but I will be pausing orders for overseas from first thing tomorrow morning when I wake up. I should be able to schedule it all in advance but I havent quite worked out how. So instead in a slightly more analogue fashion, it will be around 7.10am when Im enjoying the first cup of tea with Ned and Jim. There’s still plenty of hedgehogs waiting to hibernate through the festivities with you and yours.

JUST KEEP GOING - I’ve got a little bit of a feeling that the end is in sight, and I’m perhaps a little bit giddy with it. The last few weeks, have seen a lot of parcels leave the studio, and I’m starting to see the end of the to do list, and that’s quite exciting. For my fellow makers, we’re getting there folks, just keep going. Keep warming tired hands on cups of tea, keep taking a moment to see the changing colours outside and keep ticking things off the list. We’re turning the corner into December and slowly but surely we can start to slow down and slip into the festivities. To my gorgeous wholesale customers - thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping me so gloriously busy.
