🎉 JANUARY BOOK CLUB PICK 🎉

Want to use the New Year to fall in love with reading again? Or maybe just challenge yourself with something new that doesn't involve a screen? OR maybe you'd like to meet some new people? Whatever it may be - I can tell you, Book Club is one of my absolute favourite things we do at MA. No obligation, no commitment - if you're interested, you can buy your ticket for £15 (which includes a copy of the book AND your first drink when you arrive).

Each book takes us somewhere new in contemporary fiction, celebrating the most interesting and diverse voices writing today. We have some brill discussions and lots of laughs, and I'm so thrilled to announce Jan's pick. Something to get sucked into and devour this holiday period.

You can buy your ticket in store or on our website ❤️

THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT
by Maggie O'Farrell

Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, lives quietly in the palazzo, exploring its treasures and pursuing her artistic interests. But when her elder sister dies before her wedding to the Duke of Ferrara, Lucrezia is thrust into the spotlight. The duke quickly demands her hand, and her father agrees without hesitation.

Barely out of girlhood, Lucrezia is sent to a court rife with unfamiliar customs and a frosty reception. Her new husband, Alfonso, is equally puzzling—part charming aesthete, part fearsome ruler.

As she poses for a portrait meant to immortalize her, Lucrezia understands her role: to produce an heir for the Ferranese dynasty. Until then, her survival hangs in the balance.

Maggie O’Farrell crafts a vivid tale of resilience in The Marriage Portrait.

Tis the season, for warmth and connection and music by candlelight. For gentleness and hot toddy’s and reading in corners. For community and storytelling. And a peaceful place to go when the Christmas mayhem gets too much.

✨✨ October Book Club ✨✨

Tom Lake
by Ann Patchett

MA Book Club is the perfect chance to dive into discussion about some of the most contemporary and diverse literature out today. It's incredibly casual, a couple of hours once a month to chat, meet new people, have a glass of wine and read some great new books.

You can opt in, and opt out, each month - we will announce each month's title the month before, and you can buy your spot when it comes up on the website. Each month is £15, which includes your copy of the book AND your first drink completely free on the night. You can pop in and buy your book directly from the shop, or we can deliver.

If you would like you book copy delivered, please let us know by popping us an email at [email protected].

If you would like your book collected from the shop, you don't need to do anything, your book will be available to pick up anytime from the following day.

About the book...

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

A truly, extraordinary one for the books.

joins us at Manningtree Arts for a one night only performance for an extremely limited audience, Sunday 24 March.

Experience the captivating talent of Gwenifer Raymond, a guitarist whose musical odyssey began amidst the raw energy of punk and grunge at just eight years old. From the Welsh valleys to international acclaim, Gwenifer’s evolution from punk outfits to the soulful depths of pre-war blues and Appalachian folk is nothing short of mesmerising.

Signed to the prestigious American label ‘Tompkins Square’ in 2018, her debut album ‘You Never Were Much of a Dancer’ garnered widespread critical praise. Now, with her sophomore release ‘Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain,’ Gwenifer delves deeper into her Welsh roots, weaving a tapestry of haunting melodies inspired by the mystical landscapes of her homeland.

Embark on a musical pilgrimage with Gwenifer Raymond as she channels the spirit of ‘Welsh Primitive’ guitar playing. Having mesmerized audiences across the UK and Europe, she stands as a beacon of innovation in the music scene.

Don’t miss the chance to witness her spellbinding performance live – it’s an experience not to be missed under any circumstances.
